Took the RS for a drive a noticed that the speedo isn't working. I've heard of a uncommon problem of the plastic gear in the gearbox seizing up and breaking. I have the chance to get a new gearbox but before I go in that direction I want to check the rest of the system. Does anyone know of ways I can test if the sensor in the gearbox is receiving anything? or any other info they can add to help?

Pull the speedo drive out of the box above the CV on the drivers side. If its notchy its still good if it spins freely shes cactus. Any 2 wire VSS from a GC8 or 2 should work as long as its electronic.

I'll try getting the sensor and try that asap. I'm picking up a new cluster tomorrow so I'll test with that to cancel out some stuff. I checked the codes and got 24 + 33 which is Idle control valve and speed sensor or circuit.. ICAV code is said to be caused by the speed sensor not working as the ecu relies on it.

All AUDM Rs's are electronic, Legacy's are cable.

Can put the end of the sensor in a cordless drill. See if it moves the needle on the dash (Car will need to be on).

Thanks for your helps guys. Pulled the speed sensor and it looks like the tab that comes out of the sensor has broken off. Still need to feel the gear in the gearbox

Never seen that before!

I'm sure it doesn't have to be said - but be sure to get the other bit of the tab out before you try to install the new sensor ;)

Will the new sensor or cluster need to be recalibrated?

Cheers

I think there never was another bit of tab haha, the gearbox must've been worked on at some stage and they lost the whole tab.. So I made up a new one using some pictures. Good news is that I now have a working speedo  :yahoo: No idea about recalibration but since I used the original sensor I hope it's all fine
