Zac: I'm on salary, also IT. If you do *any* work from home, the deduction floodgates are open. Internet, phone, electricity, rent/mortgage interest, travel expenses between work and home.
If you own and run the business, then enter capital gains tax when you go to sell your house. If you're renting I don't know how it works.
If you're not happy with your accountant shop around. I had one that gave me a return less than I could have done myself. By chance the next year she wasn't available and got her colleague who is awesome, so I book in with them each year.
And yes, using an accountant is a tax deduction in the next financial year's tax return
