Stock they're as good as any other vehicle make, if not better in my book.
I reckon this perception comes from those that chase big horse power without thinking much about gearbox upgrades to match.
At the end of the day it's like the big 4wd boys bickering about which is better - a Nissan or a toyota. If it does what you enjoy doing in it that should be the end of the arguement!
Good luck with this can of worms. I think you'll find we're all on the same side of the fence since you asked on a Subaru forum...
Cheers
Bennie

Not.
Personal preference when it comes to chasing power, but as far as I am aware, it costs more and there is more work involved to chase high horsepower with any Subaru.
Wanting to buy/looking for: single genuine STi rim, genuine STi front lip, Corazon or Zero/Sports grille and another OEM grille

Professional drivers call it 'mechanical sympathy'.
If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

I cop that a lot as well. I feel like most of the people saying that are into 600hp barras, big v8's or crazy skylines they see on the internet, The're not bad but don't expect the crazy horsepower that can be had from things like 4l fords, remember most Subys are only 2l turbos and handle much better.

I agree with the above, in that an EJ or FA Boxer engine isn't the same as an SR20 or LS1. But Subaru enjoy a huge aftermarket, with a lot of well regarded companies making blocks and internals for the WRX and BRZ. Couple that with the fact that most pre 2014 Foresters can have a WRX/STi motor dropped in quite easily, there's really no limits to the Subaru apart from fiscal limitations.
Plus the chassis of a WRX is well tuned, meaning it doesn't need as much hp to get the job done.

They're not built with a muscle car state of mind.
But they satisfy my performance desires.

because what i want out of my subaru is to build it as a good track car and if i take it to the drags i can drive it hard as well. im going to spend alot of money on my subaru because i love them what way do you guys think i should go.Its stock at the moment just a few tasty mods but thats it.And thanks for all the replies

Depends how you look at it. They arent as easy to make power on as JZs and RBs and even SRs to some extent (the forged 207 aside) but at the same time they are pretty damn reliable in stock form assuming you dont drive like a peanut.
Id say 90% of the "weakness" comes down to either people kebab shifting and doing mods without a tune. The latter would kill any engine. I think youll also find its a matter of exposure. We arent in nissan or toyota communities so all we see is the big builds rather than the day to day issues people have

So build/have-built an engine based on a 207 shortblock. Don't go silly with the tune. Done.
