Hey guys. My recently bought 95 legacy has a what I would call a "whiney" primary turbo. It works fine but I think the bearing is on its way out. I have heard of these being noisy in the past and not being an issue, but should I be worried about it? I don't want to send shrapnel into the rest of the engine if it does go.

I believe it's a VF13 as my car is an early model with a wastegate on the secondary and the year model. I have seen a few on line, but does anyone know of a source in Australia? Or if i even should be worried?

Cheers

Josh

Ichiban imports in Sydney is probably your best bet.

My 93 GT has a VF 18 primary and it's also got a distinct whine. Seems to produce boost fine.

Didn't really make it for the brief period when I had the VF26 on there.

Hey, I put a new VF13 on it over the christmas break and it doesn't make any noise, though the old noisy turbo seemed fine when I had it out. No lateral play but a little bit of axial. After buying the new one I read that IHI ball bearing turbos can be noisy so I was a bit bummed but this new one is definitely silent compared to the old one. Only problem is now I can hear all the other noises! I now have the gearbox out changing the big bearing on the input shaft lol. Hopefully its back together this week.

@Josh18 - you throwing a front LSD in the box while you”ve got it split?

Most over looked gearbox mod in my opinion. While my application is for offroad, my front LSD certainly gets a work out! Onroad I can notice it in the wet when pushing it a bit.

Haha no, just want it quiet at this stage.

The box is back in now and it is so much better. Now on to the vacuum lines.

I got it off ebay through Nickel sport. It came really quickly even with free postage.

Not overly keen to spend $900 on a new primary turbo

Hey Chaaaap, what is wrong with yours? Mine came out with no radial play and a slight amount of axial play, but rally in good shape i though. I have since been told by someone who knows way more about subies than me that they can be noisy like mine was and still quite ok. He also mentioned that if it blows up its not such a big deal as ant pieces will just get stuck in your intercooler, not go through the engine like I had feared. I still have the original primary sitting there if you want it, it needs a couple of studs removed somehow though- I had to cut them to get it off!
