Any idea how I remove the pearl silver painted rails from the roof of an '07 Liberty.

They had been previously repaired, and had a bad paint job, and the clear has completely failed, so looking to see if I can remove them to take somewhere for painting to reduce cost.

I've taken the two covers off as well as the two bolts, but they are still fairly well attached... there do seem to be clips at either end that came away quite easily (looks like they were glued in with some black adhesive, doesn't look too professional, as I think they probably broke something with these clips when they removed it the first time. So the two ends are slightly loose, but the middle seems to be attached quite securely, I can't seem to get the rail to slide back or forth at all, which is how I thought the catches might have worked.

There are clips all the way along which appear to be the same type (see the attached parts diagram, 90166U), the end ones have released, but the ones in the middle between the external rail mounting points seem to be very solidly attached.

Anyone removed a set of these? is it just heat to get the adhesive to release with the clip? I had a look under the headlining and coiuldn't see anything obvious there related to the retaining clips on the inside.

Any assistance would be really appreciated.

Pretty sure the headlining needs to be removed/lowered and there are nuts to undo from under the roof skin.

I'll have to check the w/shop manual to be 100% sure.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

Thanks so much for getting back to me, I forgot to mention that I did have a look in the workshop manual, and there appear to be nuts inside the headliner for the two roof carrier attachment points, but nothing that I could see obviously for the clips (although I didn't properly remove the headliner. I just looked sideways from the gap where the sunroof goes.

The other attachments appear to just be flush with the roof ??? From what the service manual says the rail should just be able to be lifted up from the clips, so my guess is that the bodge job that the first repairer did with glueing down (probably because they broke the clips and didn't want to pay for new ones, even though the respray was a subaru warranty repair). Attached is the part of the service manual that seems relevant.

I'm thinking that really it probably looks like I just have to lift it, so careful application of the prising tools and some heat I guess is my best shot, and keep my fingers crossed :-)

Thanks so much for getting back to me.
