Ok, so Im working on a project build and have found out that the angled wastegate shaft of the TD04 wont work for me with clearances. The VF turbo series seems to have a vertical shaft which I know will work because a mate is running one in his setup.

So as the title suggests, whats the equivalent VF turbo to a TD04? The 04 was the turbo I was going to run with this EJ205 bastardised setup.

The wastegate shaft fouls on the rear bleeder of the brake booster. It has me wondering how others that do the WRX drivetrain swap get around this issue. Im not keen on dropping the engine crossmember but it might end up as a compromise yet :(

Cheers

Im assuming this is an L series era subaru and not the RS

VF8/10/12 are gonna be the closest but are all gonna be early 90 inlet spec

Thanks Barbs, options are limited! Yeah not the RS, it’s into the EA81 platform (namely the brumby) where everything is smaller!

The RS has an engine lined up for it now. I just have to put new seals front and rear, and new timing kit on it then it should be ready to drop into the RS (which still needs loads of other work done to it before it hits club rego!).

So after posting the thread starter above, I thought about it, went and looked at the setup and now the aim is to move the brake master cylinder forward to clear the wastegate shaft. This will allow me to run whatever turbo I want, but more importantly it will allow for an easy replacement turbo if I ever need one - the VF series turbo seems to be a hard one to find at the moment plus I’d like to stick with the TD04 for now.

Move the master cylinder forward brings a few other challenges to get it sorted, I’m almost losing sleep over it… I can’t wait to have some play time again to look into this deeper. It will also give me much better clearance between the turbo and the master cylinder.

Cheers

VFs are not worth what people want for them. When they were 4-600 for sure, not $850+

You could also try and swap the TD actuator onto a VF. The VF compressor cover is held on with bolts instead of a circlip like a TD so heaps of options

This what Im dealing with - I shouldve dropped a pic in my first post!

NqsKdL.jpg

This is the TF035 turbo on stock turbo exhaust manifold and up pipe. Theres no room/ability to move the turbo sideways.

If parts can be swapped Id need the VF turbine housing to clear this bleed nipple - Id be concerned that something doesnt fit up properly and it sounds like Id be making a one off setup - something Id like to avoid.

Ive since undone the bolts for the master cylinder on the booster, then dummied up what I want with a nut between the master and the booster which gives me plenty of room that Im happy with. It looks like this with my scrawling on it. Now to work out how to make this work properly as theres some hurdles to get over to achieve this!

LTTvnU.png

Issues here are:
- studs on the booster are not long enough
- new shaft would be needed thats longer to accommodate the extra space between the booster and the master cylinder

Thats about all the fun there, it could prove to be too hard to sort out. I might end up taking the booster and master cylinder to a brake specialist and see what they can come up with. Thats the expensive route

Something to be wary of Bennie, my dump pipe on the sedan sits ~20 to 30mm away from the clutch master, and I eventually lose pedal from heating the fluid in stop start traffic. That brake master is a hell of a lot closer, and while I can drive with no clutch not too badly, driving with no brakes is downright scary and dangerous.

Food for thought. I'd be thinking it's time for a custom up-pipe so you don't need to mod a turbo every time if you need to change shit.

Just my thoughts and experiences on this sort of thing.

Cheers,
Ben

MY02 Blue B4, aka 'The Project' - v8 JDM STi engine package and assorted other 'goodies' - Sold, then bought back for parts. Stripped and crushed.
MY03 Blue RX, the newer old daily, pretty well more B4 than RX now... In the process of being converted to the track toy... Watch this space!
MY02 Silver Wagon, H6 conversion, full blue/black leather and almost full black interior to go with it. In process of being stripped and sold off.
MY03 White/Silver H6 Outback, donor car for silver waghoon. Scrapped.
MY97 Silver RX, acquired to become track car, but plans changed. Scrapped.

MY13 BRG, current daily, very nice to drive, small mods to make it even nicer again.

Now i see what you mean

Wont be able to swap a VF housing onto a TD. I thought the waste gate rod was fouling hence the swap suggestion. Disregard that.

You might need to just pony up and install a VF. Factory ecu will be fine with it. Certainly looks like a nightmare to get sorted and not melting things

That’s a good point Ben - but there are already many WRX powered Brumbys kicking around with the turbo in this exact location without issues.

This is the fun bit of the internet and social media in general - people show the stuff they’ve done and how good it is or will be, but then don’t go into any details of the issues or get encountered along the way.

Once this is fired up (or not) I’ll be writing up what I find for others to possibly pick over for their interests/build plans. I say this as what prompted me to go this way was a thread on another forum where someone in the VW community slapped some SOHC heads on a WRX setup - shared a key piece of info with another fella doing the same and then the thread dies. I’m going to see how this setup goes and post up my findings even if it’s a failure or if it runs like pot.

Cheers

Wouldn't you be running bigger brakes - and different brake master?

Seems pretty sketchy to be relying on brumby brakes with a turbo EJ in there.

Thanks Duncan for the concerns with the brakes. Mods will occur here that satisfy my engineer, at this point the brake master cylinder isn’t one of things to be changed. This could change with our next conversation. For now the plan is to fit this engine in this engine bay the way it is. It’s being dummied up in a rusty half cut that once was a mighty brumby, but was thrashed and trashed beyond what it should’ve taken, so I cut it in half for this exercise.

My brumby continues to run around in stock form for now.

Cheers
