Hi all,

This idea popped into my head last night so Ive decided to put it all down in some form. Im wanting to create a custom sub/amp box for my boot.

However, i am a drummer and need maximum boot space, ie not some fibreglass mould that fills up the whole boot!! I drew the attached plan up this morning and think it may be able to work.

Im mainly sharing because im actually impressed with my own plans, but also interested in what you guys think, whether its worth it or any problems i may come across along the way?

It involves:
-3 compartments
-A lit up amp compartment (LEDs are hooked up so that they work when there is power to the amp - via remote cable???) Covered in perspex with hinges so it can be accessed.
-Concealed wiring through PVC piping
-Centre compartment is for storage. Eg random stuff that seems to end up floating around the boot! Lid has hinges and opens from the top.
-Fully sealed, angled sub box
-Whole thing will be carpeted and shallow enough so that i can pull forward the back seats and lay stuff down ontop of it.

I think you need to work around the correct encloure size for the sub rather than building the box around space efficency.
by all means adjust the box size but the sub encloseure is more important, building that to the right size first then build the rest of the box to suit.

the issue is a enclosure that volume does not match the requirements for the sub will give poor results and you may find yourself unnessisarily installing a larger sub for more DOOF when a 10in with correct volumetric size may be all you need.

Hey dude I did a custom install myself... Fiberglass sub box uses hardly any boot space and easy to remove if I have to get to my spare.

Im thinking of moving my amp somewhere else so I can put my jack back where its suppose to instead of sitting in the wheel well.

Didnt really take/make any measurements.

Materials that were need I had lying around.

Fiberglass sheeting
Resin
Some MDF to make the ring.
I used 8mm wooden rods cut to length to hold the ring in place.
Material of some sort to stretch over the ring (I used stretchy cotton)
If you choose to I had some Dynamat laying around to insulate the enclosure.

Layed down a layer of masking tape where I wanted the sub encloser then layed down 2 layers of aluminium foil then layed another 2 layers of masking tape.

Rubbed some car wax on the tape then started laying down the fiberglass n resin. Think I did about 4-5 layers. I mixed alot of catalyst in the resin so it would harden quicker.

I should have made a mould for it.. Dam! It would only fit GEN3 boots though.

I dont have time to do all the work again... Took me about 5 days to do the whole process properly...

Put your amp under the seat, then it's completly out the way. Put the sub in your front bar, cause thats where the cool kids put sound gear.

Fair enough. I could do it myself, but can't be bothered spending the time on it! If you ever decide that you'd like to make a mould for it. Let me know.

But the short puff of air the sub produces, would cool it down even more!

Speaking of 5 channel amps, has anyone got the Jaycar one? it looks the goods, i want one, but do i spend the $$ then a doofer to suit!? hmmmmmmmmmmmmm Any suggestions? Once i find one, stay tuned for a nice custom build :) AND Morgan, nice idea! though i think personally, in a sedan maybe sub one side, amp other side, with nothing in the middle, and have everything quick release...

600 does seem like quite a bit for a generic amp. I bought a generic 5 channel off ebay for about $250. Had it for about 2 years and it performs really well. I can try and track something similar if you like.

At the moment its really just talk, so id hate for you to waste your time, though if you point me in the right direction it would be awesome :) I have a rather tight space requirement because of where i want to fit it, so size is everything!

I'll have a quick scout around. Any 5 channel amp is going to be quite large-ish.
