Hi,

It's no secret that I am not hugely automotive minded. Whatever.

The trick is, I am trying to adjust the handbrake on the Outbake - I have used it far too generously in rallye style manouvers to impress females. This has caused it to be quite elastic, and not very awe inspiring.

Where do I start?

As always with my technical threads, I welcome all of you to rain down condescending remarks and internet groans, as long as somewhere in your reply lies the answer to my question.

To pay for this, I offer you...

Cheers,
Nik

time for a hydraulic handbrake conversion nik! be careful not to stretch the handbrake cable with your shenanigans. could be costly/bitch to replace. get to your mechanic, and get it adjusted. a poorly working handbrake is not only a defectable offence, and a hazard, but it's also time to change your driving techniques.

While I feel obliged to berate you with the appropriate amount of sh!t, how could I refuse such an offer! I will assume that the awesome machine you circulate in is fitted with a drum type handbrake inside the rear discs. *note to self: brush up on Suby stuff* First locate the handbrake cable adjuster. This may be located at the cable 'equaliser' (where the two rear cables become one) either under the car or under the console behind the handbrake. Or.. ( most likely) *really needing to pay more attention to my own Suby* A nut fitted to the very end of the hand brake cable at the base of the lever. You may need to move the levers boot to see it. Once the said nut has been located, back it off till it reaches near the end of its thread. Be careful not to twist the cable (or you may break it and then you will most likely need a bank loan for a new one) in the process and check its not fitted with a lock nut of death like most Toyotas. Once this is done, jack up the rear of the car, chocking the wheels (the ones on the ground, not the ones in the air) and placing axle stands under the car. Leave the hand brake off or the next step will turn to sh!t. :dash2: Remove the rear wheels and locate a small slot in the backing plate or a hole in the dics (may have a rubber bung in it). Look inside the slot/ hole and locate the shoe adjusting wheel (it's called a 'star wheel' because it's a wheel that looks like a star  ) Rotate this wheel while turning the road wheel (the big one with the tyre on it) until the road wheel almost locks, then back off until the road wheel begins to tun freely again. This will set the shoes (the brake ones, not the ones on your feet). Repeat on the other side. You may find the star wheel works the opposite way on this side. (unless you are facing the other way under the car) Once this has been done, re tension the nut on the end of the cable (not the nut on the end of the spanner) until you have a small amount of freeplay at the very start of the handbrakes travel. Lower vehicle (remember to fit the road wheels and remove axle stands first) and road test in a large paddock at a slow to moderate speed. If test is successful, re-test at a higher speed. Could the 'package' on offer be delivered in a plain brown paper bag addressed to 'Mr John Smith'??? NOTE: The author assumes no responsibility for any injury/ death or happy fun times incurred during the execution of the above process.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

Hi, I will sift through this in the morning. Unfortunately my Subaru specialist (mobile) is not back and available until the 18th of Feb. Hence my asking. Thanking you in advance and anticipation that the above information is useful. Cheers, Nik

I normally adjust it through the rear rotor first untill you feel the shoes grab the drum and then back off two clicks. You really only need to adjust the cable under the centre console if the cable is stretched. Nik you haven't been doing skidz have you?
As Tony Montana would say:
In this country, you gotta make the money first.
Then when you get the money, you get the power.
Then when you get the power, then you get the women.

I agree Frank but in my experience a lot of mechanics/ techs are too lazy to adjust the shoes so they do the cable instead, thus upsetting the overall adjustment.

hm I was always shown to adjust at the drums as the above descriptions show :D easy as... I have the small brake lever tool for it too which makes it easier as I found a normal flat head screw driver for some reason was always just a little hard to get onto the star wheel in comparison when adjusting, seemed to slip off a lot more :(.

Hi, Thanks guys. I will give it a bash, hopefully I get a chance later on today. As for skids, not really. I like to use the handbrake in gravel turning situations. Just so happens I drive on gravel every single day - my driveway! Cheers, Nik

You should try it in an early Subaru. (pre Liberty/Impreza)

Something very significant about their handbrakes.

Lets see if you can suss out why...

Hi, I do have an early Subaru (78), but I don't exactly treat her badly. She's pretty rough around the edges. Does it have anything at all to do with the 4WD system? Or am I way off? I'd be interested to know now that you've brought it up. Cheers, Nik

You got it lads! Imagine how shit the first handbrakie is when you don't know this fact, and want to impress your mates with your Colin McRae (RIP) skillz. Been there, done that
