FOLLOWING ITS UNVEILING at the Geneva Motor Show today, Subaru Australia has announced it will launch the 2010 Subaru Impreza XV in Australia later this year.

Similar to the US-market Impreza Outback Sport - the latest incarnation of the previous-generation Impreza RV offered locally - the Impreza XV will arrive in Australia with the same 2.0 litre four-cylinder Boxer engine powering the Impreza R, RX and RS.

Specific output has not been revealed, but figures are unlikely to differ from the regular Impreza.

Speaking with TMR recently, Subaru Australia's David Rowley said the Impreza XV has potential for a successful local launch.

"It's been known as the RV and the Sports Wagon previously, and those models found a niche in previous incarnations. The Impreza RV was a 'value-added' sale that proved worthwhile and it certainly had an audience, so we'll be looking at the potential here as well."

Based on the five-door Impreza hatch, the XV Crossover measures 4430mm long, 1770mm wide and 1520mm tall, compared to the regular Impreza's 4415/1740/1475mm dimensions. Both models sit on a 2620mm wheelbase.

Those larger dimensions are courtesy of the Impreza XV's Outback-like flared guards and revised bumpers.

Other features unique to the Impreza XV are roof rails, grille, and interior trim.

Australian versions will be optimised for local conditions by having a greater ride height than the European specification cars shown in Geneva.

“This is an exciting model for us because it will broaden our appeal, particularly with younger audiences looking for a car that combines fun and safety," Subaru Australia Managing Director, Nick Senior, said.

“The current generation Impreza is the best seller of any to date and we’re confident that Impreza XV will add to that success, given the earlier achievements of recreation-themed versions of the car.”

. .Pricing and volume expectations will be announced at a later date.
