Subaru Australia has announced that the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive Model Year 2011 Impreza WRX STI will be available for the first time with the choice of an automatic transmission.

Following on from the news that sedan variants are to be reintroduced to the range, Nick Senior, Managing Director, Subaru Australia, said: “We can now confirm that the revised sedan and hatchback Impreza WRX STIs will add the option of a five-speed automatic transmission.

“We’ve had increasing enquires about an auto over the last two years and we’re delighted to be able to deliver what a significant number of customers have requested.”

Mr Senior said the transmission would reflect the performance and engineering values of STI to produce a “fantastic driver’s car that will expand its appeal to a wider audience.”

Impreza WRX STIs will also continue to be available with a six-speed manual transmission.

Unveiled at the New York International Auto Show this year, revised Impreza WRX STI sedan and hatch are due on sale during the last quarter of 2010. Subaru STI specialist retailers are now taking orders.

Pricing and full specifications will be announced at launch time.

ABOUT SUBARU

Every Subaru sold in Australia features Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and a horizontally opposed Boxer engine, standard Vehicle Dynamics Control electronic stability program, and a five-star rating for occupant safety from the independent Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). The result - driving confidence.

Boring. If only they would catch up with the times and get a Twin Clutch DSG type box like the rest of the world, instead of the old slush box. *Evil glares Subaru*

I'd imagine that would put the cost of the car out of direct competition with the Evo.

Not that it's much competition these days anyway.

Ugh i could ramble on for forking days about this stuff.

autos are for motorists and manuals are for drivers. you couldnt fully exlpore the STI's full potential with a toaster changing gears for you, making it a waste of a money and resources. And no doubt the AT will be dearer. Wonder if they will go sequential paddle shift or just tiptronic sports shift which takes 6 weeks to select the gear anyway?

Hi, The more sought after cars at the moment are automatic, but not in the way Subaru will be. Maybe they will throw down a bomb ass auto box? Who knows? the fastest Subaru's in the world are auto. Cheers, Nik

Hi, Hopefully the increased revenue will allow them to produce some more hardcore models for us, not just keep them in the JDM. It's all well and good to toss off and say they are losing their focus on the boy racer market because they are throwing an auto into an STi, but that is a juvenile way of approaching this situation. The fact is, the better Subaru does off of the cushy market, the more money they will have to throw at proper projects, WRC, JGTC, etc. etc. ToMoCo falling into a seemingly bottomless pit (Audi in the 80's anyone???) allows Subaru to capitalise on the dwindling Camry confidence in America, this just seems like another avenue by which to produce more variants that we love. Good on them. Cheers, Nik
