Hi

Dad currently owns a Mini Cooper S and has done for the last 7 years. He bought it brand new in Dec '03 and its got about 97k kms on the clock which has got him thinking that he needs a new toy.
This is the longest he's EVER kept a car. Used to keep nothing more than 3 years but this has been a brilliant little car to get him around.

He's made it clear that this next phase is not going to be his mid-life-crisis but he wants to get a range of 'fun' cars that he only keeps for a year or 2.
On the list are WRX (STi if the price is right), 350Z, Golf GTI, VE SS ute, etc.

First off the mark will either be the Golf or the Rex. Im pushing for the Rex because if not, i might not have a suby when he does. Plus i wanna take it on cruises so i can keep up with all you turbo boys!!
He's sent me a couple that i want to get your opinions on. His budget is between $25-30k, <100k km, manual and little to no mods (he wants the best chance of a quick sale a year or two down the track) ...and he doesnt like the Bugeye!

I already know that the MY07+ ones arent everyone's favourite but they still are a good little car for the money.

Red MY07

Black MY07

Blue MY07 (pig nose)

Black MY06 hatch

Personally, this is my fav. Pig nose sedan with a few little mods

Black MY06

What do we think?

Looks pretty good Morgz, that black one. I haven't checked all the others yet, but it got me thinking. Find out if they are drive by wire (electronic throttle = poo). Not sure what rexies are to be honest, but might be worth trying to avoid if possible. The 2.5L is a good idea, more poke to it down low and coming from a mini I reckon the ol boy will appreciate not having to rev the tits off a 2L. In saying that, show him some good pics of a bug eye sti and get him to pick up one of those ;) Brembo, 6 sp, sti goodness!!

I think the rexies went electronic throttle around 2005 didn't they? In japan I'm sure that's the case. Really but can it be all that bad? Gen4 boys put up with it, and a sprint booster should help ;) just my two cents

There's not enough STiness in that list.

If there's a fairly stock peanut STi he'd be interested. Bugeye's are also a bit old - going from a 2003 Mini hes wanting something newer. I think mums car has the elec throttle. Pain in the butt in an auto but manual should be ok? Still yet to test drive any though

I'd be tempted with *cough* the Golf *cough*. There's just something about them. WRX would be fine too. As far as WRXs go, I think so long as the service history is good and the kms about right then it's hard to go wrong with something that's 3 years old. Just a matter of picking a colour.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

He loves the Golf too! Id say thats next on the list after the Rex - the Gen5 GTI is a bit pricey at the moment. Give it a year or two and he'll be onto that.

I guess that is something he's worried about - the previous owner thrashing the crap out of rex. A low-modded one indicated its been more conservatively driven.

Hi,

350Z, S2000, MGA, Austin Healey BN-1/4.... the list is endless. Fun cars have two doors.

Cheers,
Nik

I mentioned S2000 on Fri night when we were talking about it he could be interested in that
Not just 2 doors, often only 2 seats as well.

Hi, There's a Morgan rep. for sale at the moment for 30k. I think it's on Carsales. Soft top looks a bit dodgy though. Cheers, Nik

Hi, Could still be tits. But I'd be leaning him towards a nice Austin Healey. What does your Dad want with a WRX? Old people in WRX's are not cool. Not even close. Cheers, Nik
