My reverse camera and TV setup

This weekend I upgraded my stereo. Its a 7" inch touchscreen Kenwood system. Here are some specs:
The usual stuff:
- DVD player
- Bluetooth connectivity
- iPod integration
The extras:
- Reverse camera
- Digital TV
I made a video showing the interface and how it all works...

Pictures tell the story....
Its quite an amazing system overall. I'm still getting use to the touch-screen (not a fan!) but thankfully its supplemented with a small remote.
The reverse camera is extremely clear. Can read rego plates with ease. Its a relatively stealth install, and the wires just run in between the headliner and the door rubbers along the drivers side. Also, the lense is adjustable. I've got it setup so I can see the extremity of the car (the rear bar) which in turn gives me some perspective.
The TV tuner is crystal clear. Only slight audio cuts when on the move, but other than that, its flawless. See the video. Also, its not ground to the handbrake so it can be viewed whilst driving. Not that I do that, obviously.

Bluetooth mic:
TV antennas + remote reciever:

Which kenwood unit you got? where did you get the tv tuner? and what cable are you using for ipod?
I have ddx7039 love the unit, have also added reverse cam which i have switched to view while driving forward.
Wanted to add tv tuner,my ipod cable only charges?had the guys at Autobarn add it when doing stereo, they are confused that it wont work and wanna send head unit to kenwood, i say no, i'm sure they used wrong cable.
I pod works through AUX - charges on USB (and says ipod connected on ipod, not on kenwood)
I gave up on ipod and rip mix cds old school.

but seriously, good job shiv. looks like a pretty sold unit.
question though, does anyone spend enough idle time in there cars when not driving to actually watch a tv show or movie? i'm either driving or out of the car in the real world

It doesn't obstruct vision anymore than those black strips your legally allowed to have on your front windshield. But yeh its one of the few drawbacks of the system as I wish it was more discreet. Didn't have much in the way of choice though - I have dark tinted windows...Good work Shivvy!

7039? Yours must be from another country. 7036BT is what I got and its Australian stock. The other one is 8036BT.Heya Shiv,

Kenwood only do analogue TV tuners which is a thing of the past. I opted for a Clarion digital TV tuner which is crystal clear, as you can see. A former work mate of mine supplied it and we did the install together.
iPod cable - interesting topic. That was the biggest rip off in this entire exercise. $72 for that! There are generic ones but they're poo. I can complain as much as I want but thats how they make they're money. Mine can display the videos off my iPod as well.

I'm still using my mirrors, haha! It takes some getting use to, but it has its advantages when reverse parking up against a concrete wall in the uni or shopping mall car park.hahaha outback drivers...i just use my eyes when reversing

Even though I spend plenty of time in traffic (don't we all!), I'm not going to pretend like I can properly watch an entire 1/2 hour TV show on the go, because that'd be stupid. Thats not how this system should be used.
Its great for having running in the background so you can just listen to it. For example the 6PM news when undoubtly traffic is at its worst. Also great for those occations when I have passengers in the car. Now its Spring, so soon enough I'll be driving down the coast with my mates to go fishing. It'll be a feature in that sort of an instance. Limited uses but a real treat when in use.

Didn't think of other brand IPOD/TV TUNER how do they install - assuming AV cables? What connections are needed when looking non KWOOD

I made my Eonon DVD function work while driving and occasionally watched some movies on the road. I live half an hr away from everything (work, Kt) so it worked well for an episode of anything!
Was there no other way of running the reverse camera into the cabin other than drilling a hole in the tailgate?

Yeh thats right. TV tuner is concealed in the footwell. We ran the wires to the back and used the AV output. The only difference is instead of pressing "TV", I need to press "Video". But well worth it because the TV reception is significantly better in digital, as I'm sure you all know.Didn't think of other brand IPOD/TV TUNER how do they install - assuming AV cables? We were thinking of running it up through the garnish but the angle of the wire meant it was putting a lot of force on the camera and it was hard to stay in place. If you had a factory fitted spoiler, the best place overall is on the underside of the spoiler giving you the 'top down' view of your rear bumper.

Funnily enough my car came with touch up paint in the glove boxDid you use touch up paint around where you drilled to prevent rust?
But no I'm not using that...yet. I've been recommended to use some sort of sealant which apparently works better. Getting it this Wednesday. Don't have anymore details on it than that.
Haha of course mate, eyes on the road. Unless its one of those dirty SBS flicks, in which case I *might* have a bit of a crashah i see. well i understand it for kids etc but i'd like to think me and my mates had enough to talk about on a car trip to not need to watch tv.

Thanks Shane.hey shive great system, but why did you drill a hole in the rear harch? should have done a beteer job than that mate..
Unlike the rest of the Gen3 range, the Outbacks don't have their reflectors built into the centre of the rear garnish - its mounted on the rear bumper bar instead. As a result, there is no space inside the centre of the garnish for anything to be threaded through which is why we drilled a hole in the hatch. I suspect it'll be easier with a Legacy garnish or Euro garnish which are designed to have bulbs and wiring run through them.
