Yeah , please do mate.

Very wise suggestion... I bet that the majority of people don't realise the dangers associated with doing a bench fuel pump test either to be honest... Thanks for heads up mate :)

Well.

I have decided to to chuck the SARD pump at some stray dog whilst set alight.

Piece of ****.

And after going to Just Jap at Kirrawee (free plug.... sickkents!) They let me play with a Bosch 040.

After discussions with the lads there, they reckon that the Bosch 040 intank pumps is rather overrated.

The whole bottom of the pump is a pickup... the bottom of the pump is simply wire mesh. Wasn't ideal for my application.

So I settled with a Walbro GSS342. Rated at 500hp.... no worries. Old mate reckoned his one has been running sweet for several years in his 275kwatw whip.

I once had a Walbro.... but it looked nothing like this. I suspect my old Walbro was a fake.

This is what it's meant to look like:

As I once believed, the 342 doesn't come with mounting hardware specific to Subaru. But I made it work regardless.

With the sock mounted, I also, with great pain, managed to get the Hyperflow Subaru WRX In Tank Anti-Surge Unit to suit 01-07 WRX. I was told this would bolt in.

LIKE HELL IT DIDN'T!!

Big props to Dylan for the help. It was a rather epic fitment, and he motivated me to keep going, and not throw the $200 contraption at the previously mentioned burning dog carcass.

Walbro is a good choice. Have had no troubles with mine. I was also told by the dude I bought it off that the Bosch was no better - just more difficult to fit and more expensive.

Oh.

My god, that is a large cable tie you are using to secure the fuel pump.

Happy?

You seriously cant beat bosch :D

Well, the manager at Just Jap was saying that he's had several failures of the 040...

And advises against customers buying them.

People complain that anything less than 1/3 to 1/4 of a fuel tank, and you get epic fuel surge (possible leaning out... bad for motor up in high revs.. BAAAAAD!

They're massive, and require lots of hacking and cutting of the original fuel pump assembly.

And the design of the fuel pickup of the Bosch doesn't suit at all the Hyperflow in tank baffle.

Posted Image

That there is the bottom of the 040. It's just mesh. That's where the fuel is picked up from.

This an 040 on a S14 Nissan fuel pump assembly (similar to Gen2/GC8... another reason why Gen2>Gen3)
Compared side by side to my pump install, if you note, my install picks up fuel deeper from within the tank, making use of the factory in tank swirl pot. I've just added an extra advantage... The hyperflow in tank anti surge unit (additional baffle) around the fuel sock intake (third picture... without baffle)

So therefore... YES YOU CAN BEAT BOSCH.... EASILY!

If you need more pumping power... use walbro as a lifter pump to an external baffle, then use a Bosch 044 external pump or two....

:)
