Ok so, I changed my oil last night and I think I might have found some little shavings of metal in it.

Also, when my turbo gets up to about 14psi i almost starts making a clicking noise, I think it's turbo related because it only happens on higher boost.

How do I diagnose what's happening?

Metal shavings in the oil can also mean big end bearing is getting worn..

Hey Mate,

Do you have a magnetic sump plug? You should invest in one because it will draw all the shavings away from your engine, and too the magnet.

Can you explain more precisely what the clicking noise is?

Cheers,
Shazza

I'll have another drive today and see if I can record it or describe it better. I thought all sump plugs were magnetic :s I think I might get one.

that clicking noise is most probably the EBC solenoid mate, if it clicks really rapidly a higher boost its actuating very quickly for boost control, its designed that way :) yours is aftermarket higher duty cycle than the stocker!!

It's only started being noisy almost since the oil change though? I'll have to do a bit of inspection, hopefully it's something simple, cos I did move the solenoid last week!

Its not the start of rod knock is it. That can sound like a light "tictictictic" before it gets to the full on "thock thock thock"

make sure you put the rubber mounts back onto it. i originally mounted it just to the chassis and it was very noisy haha

The fact that there is metal in the oil is certianly cause for concern...

I am definitely concerned about it! I guess I'm just trying to narrow down what it actually is, the noise I'm talking about is definitely boost related. I did the ol screw driver and ear trick to listen to points of the engine, and there were no abnormal noises anywhere so I'll have to wait and see I guess.

If it's a dead motor, might be an excuse for the 2.5 ;)

I used magnatec which is what I always use.

And alex I think you are on the money ;) I didnt put the rubber back on, I'll be doing that tomorrow!

Pull the intake off and check for end float in the turbo.

Magnatec isn't awesome. Its on the top side of the cheap ****.

Will do that tomorrow!

I know magnatec isn't great, but changing oil once a month really hurts the wallet ;)

I've been using castrol edge 10-60 in my Gen3. Epic oil.

Also use castrol 10-30 in the suby, stops it making that bloody ticking noise in the top end.
