Subaru has released a single but revealing teaser image for the all-new 2012 Impreza Sedan ahead of its unveiling at the New York Auto Show later this month.

For 2012, the Impreza is bypassing the usual mid-life facelift and heading straight into new model territory. And while the current line-up kicked off as a hatch-only offering, the new Impeza family will feature sedan and hatch variants from the outset.

From the new Impreza's profile, it is clear that Subaru's next-generation small car is inspired by the Impreza Design Concept revealed in November last year.

At the rear, the 2012 Impreza's tail-lights extend into the rear quarter panel, while the C-pillar, wheel arches and belt line all point to a close link with the larger Liberty. It is likely that the rear and front ends will reveal a similar influence.

Technical details have yet to be revealed, although the new Impreza line-up will undoubtedly draw power from Subaru's new third-generation boxer engine, already driving petrol models in the 2011 Forester range.

As with the current Impreza range, an all-wheel-drive platform has also been confirmed for the next-generation model.

“We are very excited about the amazing stylish new Impreza, which will not only broaden Subaru’s appeal significantly, but offer a new level of interior quality, technology and the safety for which we’re famed,” Subaru Australia Managing Director Nick Senior said.

Launch dates for the new Impreza have yet to be revealed, although a first or second quarter Australian launch in 2012 is likely.

This from Subaru RSS:

SUPER EFFICIENT NEW IMPREZA TO DEBUT IN NEW YORK

Subaru's new generation Impreza will be a star of the New York International Auto Show when it debuts in the early hours of April 21 (Australian time).

The incredibly frugal All-Wheel Drive Impreza sedan and hatch are totally new designs, featuring greater cabin space, major gains in interior design and refinement, plus multiple technological advances.

New Impreza will be unveiled at 0305 am AEST on April 21, when images and information will be available at subaru.com.au

Nick Senior, Managing Director, Subaru Australia, said: “We are very excited about the amazing stylish new Impreza, which will not only broaden Subaru’s appeal significantly, but offer a new level of interior quality, technology and the safety for which we’re famed.”

A date for new Impreza’s Australian release has yet to be announced.

The thing is.... the new Kia Cerato does look kinda cool >_<

I prefer a more aggressive look for the Impreza, but I guess they are trying to send a different message these days.

Are they doing the same thing with the Liberty? They need to fix that Gen5 turd, and holy hell its going to smash the Gen5 price points lol.

I like the shape, hate the color.

Can anyone Photoshop WRX Blue, and some gold STi wheels onto that pic?

Cheers,
Shazza

i spose it will look okay once its tarted up into WRX guise, but you cant make much judgement from that photo.

Looks like a Mazda 3 got a leg over a Corolla though :/

That concept looked good, and the actual car looks really similar. But its kinda like kate hudson and goldie hawn. Yeah... But no.
Why do subaru insist on big flat cut off guards? It looks repulsive.

this is where they fail and exactly what happened with the Gen5 Legacy, they venture TOO FAR away from the original concpet styling cues. The Gen5 concpet had a fantastic rear end and they shafted it in production. Same story hear, and you can tell just from a side image!

Ironically it is probably bigger than my B4... :P My sisters Barina is almost bigger than my Gen3. Why are most cars enormous now? I like Medium sized cars - but the Gen5 Liberty is a Tank.

I have disliked most new cars recently. Hating the hawk eyes, there is many examples of it done right, but so many fails (that Spark thing can't be unseen! the headlights are HUUGE). This isn't too bad, but like others have mentioned, it looks very... everyday, like a KIA/Hyundai, Subaru isn't pushing any visual boundaries with the design at all. The jonsibal concept image above looks amazing, I would drive that.

EDIT: Woah on second look it really does look like a Gen4 Liberty... WTF!! Maybe the Gen6 Liberty will look like an Impreza... hmm.

Like i said in gen thread, the base model always looks boring and without imagination, a standard gen3 with stock steel rims and mouldings looks boring as, but then look at some of the b4's on here.

Don't fret, the WRX and STi will blow minds, or people will get used to them, either way, the engineering is top notch, fark what it looks like.....you buy it to drive it fast.

Every new car looks like a camry these days anyway.

If thy tint is dark and thy wheels are black thou car be declared b11tchin'

So you can run it on 6psi with an rx fuel pump? :P

nice rear neg camber lol

rear looks nice, front looks like a retarded pig, but that is the USDM model grill will be different here no doubt (the US is always different) and the WRX kit will make the lower part of the front more aggressive, i actually now think it might look ok in JDM/AUDM spec
I still dont like the fact they lost the frameless windows, but im guessing it has to do with safety rating.

im not writing it off just yet..
