while giving my rex an allover service i flushed the radiator. i also noticed the heater core tubes were disconnected and bypassed. i assumed the heater core had a leek, so i reconnected them and suprise suprise theres coolant allover the passenger footwell.

Now to replace the heater core what must i do.

so far iv taken basically ALL the interior out inc dash, centre console, steering wheel, comparments etc etc.
i can see what looks to be the heater core inside some sort of pastic casing.

my question is how do i get it out now? do i have to remove that structural looking support bar that runs the width of the car?

heres some pics so u know wats going on

Yeah mate, the support bar has gotta go, then there will be a big metal clip on the passenger side holding it onto the A/C fan & pump unclip that and wiggle, bend & swear like mad until it comes loose.

ok iv run into a bit of a problem,, theres no clip connecting the heater box to the ac/fan. so it looks like ill hav to remove the ac and fan in order to get to the heater box. does this sound right?is there another way?

Clips here mate, once its unclipped you have to wobble it with the force of 1000 gods to get it loose its tight as...

While at the same time trying to pull it inwards so the heater pipes come through the cabin.

It's a much easier job if you do remove the ac and fan first but then you will have to de and re-gas the ac of course.

Take core to a radiator shop, and have them recore it.

ill take your advice, how muchy for recoring u reckon?

ive made the executive desicion to remove the ac and blower unit seeing that there is no physical way of removing the heater core otherwise (imo), the air con didnt work when i bought the car, and iv pressed both the screw caps of the ac pipes down and no gas escaped, will it be safe to remove ac piping?

cheers

if by this you mean you took the screw caps off and then pressed the valve in, then yes it has no gas in it

update: after much swearing i managed to get the heater box out, followed by the removal of the core, i flushed some water thru it and it drips considerably. so now what are my best options

recore?
after market heater?
pay out of my arse (subaru option)?

if anyone has bought an aftermarket heater core please let me know where u bought it from and a rough price

many thanks
Nick

Recore.

Done it heaps with all makes/models. Never a worry.
Just use a good quality radiator shop that offers a decent warranty.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?
