Yeah it was the only way to get them off.. The bracket on the old strut had a hole that the brake line went through with no gap in the side, unlike the new coilovers which do which made it easier to reinstal..

ahhh i see, yeah im pretty sure then gen 3 have that bracket but its actually removable :P

I put these on my Impreza coupe about a year ago and the rear pillow ball top mounts have started to knock!!

Does anyone know where I can get replacement rear top mounts or OE that will fit the coilovers?

PS Good write up dude! The wagon sits so much nicer!

Sorry for the hijack!

The bolts that hold the strut to the knuckle? A breaker bar.

yeah i used a socket and socket wrench on one side and a ring spaner on the other.. Put a pipe I had lying around over the ring spanner and used it as a breaker bar.. once the seal is brocken its not to hard.. just get some wd40 or something similar and put a heap on and leave it for half hour or so.. then its just all muscle to break the seal haha.. good luck...

On a Gen1 sedan you remove the rears from the inside. You have to remove the back seat (seat and backrest) and you'll see the strut tops in there, under the seatbelts.

You shouldn't need to remove the brake lines. Squirt Inox on the old bolts and brake line clips, then work the clip loose with pliers and a sawing left/right motion.
