My car has been doing something very strange of late...

every now and again... she just wont start... sometimes when i get in her for the first time, she clicks and does nothing... then after a few clicks she kicks over fine...

but this isn't limited to mornings or being cold...

after driving her about 15km in to town... i stopped to grab the girl and i some lunch, then when i got back in same story... 'cept this time far longer bout of game playing, so much so i almost thought it wouldnt start....

i've tried removing the key, putting it back in, locking unlocking the doors... moving the wheel to break the steering lock... but it just seems to start when it wants to...

my job needs me to have a good car and one that starts when it has to... as timing is imperative...

any advice guys i'd appreciate it

Thanks

Jon :)

When it wont start, do the dash lights go a bit dim?

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

Hows your battery terminals? Clean and tight?

Next time it doesnt want to go, get someone to hit the starter motor with a rubber mallet and see if that does anything.

Mine has a similar problem right before the battery shit itself mate.

Also, as Lance said, make sure the battery terminals are done up right and there is no shit on them

sounds like startermotor to me mate if it does it again just get a screwdriver between possitive and negative on the startermotor and if it turns over you will know for sure
you can ether get a new one or have your old one reconditioned

but also as said above check your terminals they will also cuase this problem
if they are tight already try spraying some degreaser on them to get any corrosion off

and i would be also checking the battery for dead cell's just use a multimeter should be about 12.1v and when car is turned on and running should be around 14.2v as alternator is chargeing

To be honest, all the symptoms are pointing towards a dying battery or a bad earth.

now - if your battery is dying and it's relatively new (and not faulty) i'd be hunting for a bad earth or a bad alternator as root cause.

But for now, i'm putting my left testi that it's a bad battery.

90% of the time if it is the starter, you won't even hear the click sound.

Cheers guys... i'm assuming it is the Earth by the feedback... but i will check the terminals...
the battery would only be 12mths old if that...

its maintenance free too so i cant really check it for faults... however i will put the multimeter over it tomorrow morning before i go to work...

But for now, i'm putting my left testi that it's a bad battery.

keep the testes safely tucked in (specially being a dragons supporter, you may need to get kicked in them come finals time :P ) just kidding i am a die hard bronco :P

where is the earth?? anyone got a pic or can take one with a big arrow highlighting it to me??

Thanks heaps guys....

I'll bet your right one it's a starter solenoid (dirty contacts).

If you still need the info, lemme know. there was a bunch of links to the manuals (4000+ pages) somewhere in here. Fairly sure I have since changed my network and the link will no longer work but I can always up it again

(its called Liberty_1998_2003.pdf and is 110mb large... its quite extensive)

Stuff goes here

As in, i'd be checking all of the above, a car with 250k k's had it's fair share of wear and tear put on it.. think about how long that origal alternator and starter motor have been used!..

But, i'm still saying it's your battery.
