Anyone else finds that this upsets them?
Subaru Australia tell me that it's normal to rev high when cold and hot at idle.
I hate it!
I don't suppose has anyone found a way to fix it?

Oh that will be good if he sees this thread!
Just had a quick look and it doesn't look like he has a thread going??
Here's his profile though if you want to shoot him a PM.
Might be worth answering the other guy's questions too... how high is too high and what trans have you got? Could help with the diagnosis

A thread going for high revs?Just had a quick look and it doesn't look like he has a thread going??
Thanks,, I'll PM him. Here's his profile though if you want to shoot him a PM.
Auto.....aprox 2,300 when cold.....1,200 when hot. All new Subarus after 2008 have high idle speed revs.Might be worth answering the other guy's questions too... how high is too high and what trans have you got? Could help with the diagnosis
And thanks for the welcome to the forum!!!

Out of interest, do the rev's drop if you knock it into neutral instead of D?
Revs should go higher when you put it into neutral.
Get out of my thread.

Being an auto you'd expect it to rev a little higher

its good to see someone on here with the same car
I have never really looked twice at the idol revs but they have never seemed too high to me.
When i jumped in my car this morning, initially for a second or 2 the reves where just above 2K, then they slowly went down to approx 1.8K, I drove to the petrol station around the corner (2min drive) to put air in my tyres and once in neutral the revs went down to 1k (while the cold light was still on) once the light was off the revs where less.
The only reason why I believe that your revs may go high or jump up is if you haven’t driven your car in a while and the alternator is running. Just my opinion but hope that helps. Ill check when i get in my car after work today and ill let you know.

Well, I'm comparing the idle revs to my older Liberty.I have never really looked twice at the idol revs but they have never seemed too high to me.
1.8K is far too high for me.When i jumped in my car this morning, initially for a second or 2 the reves where just above 2K, then they slowly went down to approx 1.8K
Also engine braking is not as good because the revs are too high at idle. When I go down a hill and take my foot off the throttle , the car won't slow down with engine braking alone and I have to apply the brakes more often then I has to with my old Liberty.
There's many other things I don't like about the high revs in idle.
When you try and put your car in reverse with you manual transmission, the revs at idle are too high so the syncros in your gearbox are working harder to try and engage reverse. That's why you find it hard to engage reverse. This would not happen if your idle revs dropped down to a sensible 600 rpms.

It was good on my Liberty auto!I'm pretty sure engine braking on an auto box will be pretty non-existant.
But not on the Impreza I have now, because in order to have engine braking the idle speed has to be low. That applies to a manual or auto.

wow very interesting as i did not know that about reverse. Just so u know it was at 1.8k when i started it but it was slowly dropping. I am going to keep an eye on it very carefully for the next couple days and ill let you know what the revs are sitting on.
Ps what i engine braking?? i am assuming it I using the gears to slow down?

Unless you're using the gear selector (3,2,1) in your auto, you can't be engine braking...
