So, the initial excitement of single turbo boost has worn off a little and disappointment has set in. The turbo spools well and feels really nice but runs out just waaaay too early. The 6spd makes it drivable but it's a little disappoint.

What would be a good turbo upgrade from stock turbo (it will be re-tuned afterwards) for a 2.5L STi?

I'm after more consistent power across the rev range and obviously more power would also be nice.

Suggestions and links would be nice.

- Alex.

Ugh i could ramble on for forking days about this stuff.

Can buy them for about $800 on ebay from Kinugawa

Is the TD05 a Subaru turbo?

What benefits (other than price) is it going with that rather than going down the line of a GT35/40 or something similar?

Ugh i could ramble on for forking days about this stuff.

They are not essentially a subaru turbo, but complete bolt on job. They are based of the Mitsubishi TD's but modified to have different size turbine housings, compressor wheels ect. Advantage is theres about 3 compressor wheel choices plus the 2 different exhaust housing sizes, these turbos can be modified later on aswell. Say you go for a 18G wheel and dont like it, you can change it out with the 20G wheel ect. Thes would be easily servicable aswell.

Im going down the same path as you eventually and i have been convinced (by others and myself) that these are the best bang for buck turbos available. Im going with a TD05H20G with the 7cm rear.

Convert it to twin turbo. V31 and V32.

That would be a fantastic idea.

I have a GTPS02 which is the 20G with a 8cm rear. I get 18psi in third from <3500rpm.

plenty of fun to be had, i have a mate with a 18G with 8cm rear housing and it is really hard to tell the difference.

do not worry about lag, the 2.5 rids all the lag with these medium sized turbos!

There's a guy selling an AVO450S on perth-wrx that i'm semi-tempted by. Ceramic coated exhaust housing too.

This turbo made 329hp and 460Nm on my 06 STi at 1.4bar(20psi) with stock TMIC, decapped injectors, exhaust and a CAI.
This is a great turbo for a 2.5L and is able to hold boost all the way to redline.

Quite tempted. This was on his 2.5L 06 sti.

I reckon the 20G 7cm would be mad. Quicker spool up? But less top end?

I don't know alot about all the kinds of turbos and housings etc. But my mates 07 STI is making 225kw@w on the stock turbo.

The bbk turbos seem to be getting good results too! billet wheels ftw

This would be good Alex price dependent. Kando's TD06SL2-20's are great value.
I had an APS SS42 (420hp) and it was on full song by 31-3200rpm.
Lag wouldn't be much of an issue with this. I reckon it would have great boost well before 3500.
2.5's FTW.

He's selling it for $1000. It's done about 30,000kms in total which i dont think is too terrible.

What other mods would be required (other than a retune) to make this work?

Ugh i could ramble on for forking days about this stuff.

Just on a side note would you need to change the dump pipe? Just curious is all

Thanks

Not alot. That turbo is good for around 220-230ish at a guess as it is a 450S (S for small exhaust housing) on a good conservative tune. It would be a tourquey sucker.
Your injectors should just have enough headroom to achieve that. Should get a fuel pump.
I'm not quite sure what mods you have on your car at the moment, I'll have to have a read.

It's got a full stainless exhaust (inc. dump as far as i know) a good cold air intake and a hyperflow catchcan.

I think you'd be happy with that AVO. Just check for shaft play or take it to Doug and get him to have a look if you are unsure.
See how it goes with just a fuel pump upgrade and take it from there.
I think you'll love the difference with just that turbo and tune.
Go haggle.

there are at least 10 turbo's which would be suitable for what you are after :D

fuel pump, exhaust, stock sti cooler and large turbo will net you ~220 atw if you please, boost dependent

stock airbox is good for 250kw atw on the GD's if you wanted to go back.
