'Carnage' at Melbourne horror smash
Marika Dobbin

A Melbourne man is dead after the car he was travelling in crashed into a pole near the Rod Laver Arena this morning.

Batman Avenue has been closed in both directions for cars and pedestrians, and is not expected to reopen for several hours.

The accident occurred when a Subaru station wagon carrying three people slammed into a pole while travelling north on Batman Avenue, just north of Swan Street, at about 4.35am.

A male passenger in the backseat was fatally injured and died before ambulance crew were able to reach the scene.

Intensive Care paramedic Nicholas Goodwin said the car was so badly damaged it was unrecognisable.

"We've attended a pretty nasty car accident this morning in Batman Avenue where unfortunately another young person has lost there life and two other people have been seriously injured," Mr Goodwin said. "Another nightmarish scene of carnage at a motor vehicle accident. It's quite surprising that the other occupants of the vehicle did not lose their lives."

A 27-year-old female passenger suffered abdominal and head injuries, and her blood pressure was dangerously low when the ambulances arrived.

She was fitted a neck brace and treated by a drip in her arm, which administered pain relief and fluids to help stabilise her condition, before being taken by ambulance to the Alfred Hospital. She remains in a

serious condition.

The 35-year-old male driver appeared to have minor injuries and was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Investigators from Major Collision are examining the scene and police will prepare a report for the Coroner.

For the car to be unrecognisable, there must have been a decent amount of speed involved. What a waste.
