Won't be as comfy, reliable, practical or as nice to drive as your Gen3.

Do it so long as you realise it's a 20yo car that needs maintenance. Lots of maintenance. And parts ain't fallin' off trees for those things.
Won't be as comfy, reliable, practical or as nice to drive as your Gen3.
I'd keep my Gen3 except I can feel the gearbox on its way out soon and I'd rather find some sucker to buy my car off me now before I'm forking out a couple grand for a new box.

That black SVX has been on carsales FOREVER.
I wonder what's wrong with it.
Yeah I know.. he has it listed for $5800, and I offered him $4800 and I think he is keen.
But it's hard when he's in another state.. over the internet.. with not that much information. Adam has put me onto someone who I think knows a fair bit about SVX's..
I could take the easy way and buy a clean VL.. or I could go for the long run, pay $5k for an SVX and expect to pay atleast $5k in work/maintenance. But is it worth it?

My friend was looking at this Gen 2.
130km, $5500.
Would you steer him away from it?
Sorry been off-site all day
anyway, is it a RX? only RX's and Heritages had the issue 2.5L DOHC, also seen in Outbacks of same era.
As Marv said, it is going to happen, mine was at 161,000km but the dealer wound the odo foward so he was not under the consumer act to repair my car as act states cars under 10yo an 160,000km are under stat warranty.
(only reason ever to wind odo fowards) grrrr
anyway, at home, $1500 job to replace HG, and do 100,000km service (because if you dont your a moron cause you might as well do it! also swap clutch if manual.. again.. labor component is already done while doing headgaskets, might as well do EVERYTHING!
if its not overheating now it should be alright.. if it is, how bad? can it be driven softly without it boiling over?
i have a mate who absolutly COOKED his engine.. like water was coming out exhaust, radiator cap off when cranking the car water was spraying 4ft in the air and it wouldnt even idle.. all plugs full of water, white foam was spraying out the oil filler cap and even then the heads were not cracked.
replaced head gaskets on the cheap and car is still running 2 years on.. actually at first we ran seal-up through the engine for 2 days.. swaped out the bad oil 3 - 4 times untlll it was not water, filled it with hot water from the laundry and kept cranking it for literally 15 minutes or untill the starter got too hot and eventually it fired up on 1, then 2, then 3 and 4 cyl and this car still ran for 6 months before it wouldnt run any more.. and then we just did a head gasket job on it..

I find mine loses a bit of punch when the weather gets like that. But still hauls along nicely.
