Subaru has confirmed it will bring a new take on 2009's Hybrid Tourer Concept to next month's Tokyo Motor Show, this time dubbed Advanced Tourer Concept (ATC).

A pair of teaser images released today by Subaru reveal a version of the earlier concept that looks near production-ready; the wide gullwing doors and slim wing-mirrors of the earlier concept having been replaced by more conventional items.

The headlights and front bumper have also been transformed: there's a new headlight design, a broad grille-frame and deeper vents and foglight housings.

Like its predecessor, the ATC will be powered by a hybrid system. Rather than the earlier concept's 2.0 litre engine, the ATC will pair a brand-new 1.6 litre direct-injected boxer engine with a single electric motor.

Subaru says the 1.6 litre boxer engine will become a feature of the carmaker's future engine range.

The hybrid system has an Electric Vehicle mode, which allows AWD motion using only the motor at start-up and on low-speed drives. When decelerating, the regenerating mechanism uses the motor as a power generator.

Energy will be provided by a lithium-ion battery. For now, power and performance figures for the petrol and electric powertrains remain a secret.

Subaru's new Lineartronic CVT transmission will also feature, along with the brand's Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system.

The Advanced Tourer Concept will debut alongside the final production version of Subaru's rear-wheel-drive sports coupe, the 2012 BRZ.

Subaru will do what they always do. Have a gorgeous concept and then the actual production model looks like a giraffe that swallowed 34 chainsaws and a land mine.

The Gen5 concept was brilliant, then they ruined it, im not hopeful for this at all.
