I'd imagine splicing the signal wire into the ECU pinout for RPM would be the way to go?

Chuck some details up of the unit.

Being an Outback it's a Gen III, if it were a Liberty it would be a Gen IV.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

No matter whether its an Outback or Liberty, that right there is a Gen4.
I almost bought that exact unit for my track car on ebay. The same seller also does individual digital units for oil temp, press etc.
You need to download a Gen4 manual. I think there is one on this forum.

Edit: found it.

here is something funny ,
i have installed air ratio gauge and a digital tacho to my RS so i thought why dont i see how i installed it
I found out it was the the orange wire on the back of the cluster after researching all the subaru wire diagrams
it always the orange wire but ............. a few luxury style models like the GT and H6 liberty and outback models
its a brown wire and the orange is for the mini display (fuel usage , km to empty , live fuel usage and the time )
so what i did was connected my green wire from thew unit to my gator clip on my light tester and poked the
orange and brown behind the plug with the pins in it to see which one i get a signal

so all is good the brown wire was the signal wire tacho is now working and so is the volts
now i might do some more research find out what wire is the temp so i keep the wire nice and neat behind the dash
with out having to install all new sensors
