Okay, so I know it is probably a stupid thing to be asking, as it is the most basic thing ever really, but hear me out.

My reverse lights aren't working MOST OF THE TIME. Each day when I hop in, stick it in reverse, Nope, nothing. I usually get working lights once or twice a month.

So ive been trying to fix it, but before I get it looked at, I thought id ask here.
  • Its NOT the bulbs, bulbs are working fine, I have taken them out and tested (even today i have)
  • I have gone through the whole boot, checking for loose connections, and as far as i can see, there are none.
  • I've given it a slight hit, to try and trigger something, but nope
  • Also, its not the fuse.
When I got my rego check done, they told me about it, and to get it fixed straight away, They said they shouldnt have passed me because of it, but will anyway, its not only that though, I often do actually need them, and find myself turning on my hazards as some light source at all when reversing.

So, yeah, thats about it. I'm sure ill get a lot of responses saying
"Omg are you stupid"
"Bro, its so easy, I fixed the reverse lights on my kebab spec car a thousand times".

etc.

But I am actually stuck.

Checked the switch that registers your in reverse?
Should be around your shifter... or maybe cause its a subie up under the dash.

Just throwing ideas out there.

Check the two connectors on the gearbox (should be able to get them from the engine bay) as they may be loose.

See if you get power to the rear light assembly aswell by using a test light

Checked the Engine/gearbox plugs, everythings fine.

Bulb's do work, but im going to get the multimeter out and see if the plugs at the back are giving off power (doubt it).

Any other input?

Well i though that, but the break lights and reverse lights are the same, i can switch them around, all lights work, but only when they are in the break light socket.

check power at the plugs then. start at the pug and work back, find out where in the circut its lossing power and go from there.
sounds like the gear box switch itself.

Think i may have found it,
Dodgy shot from under the car, There are these 2 (what look to be right) plugs into the Gbox, with cords going to the engine.
They are on the passenger side of the car.

I know its probably impossible to see, but here goes.

there is another single black plastic plug on the drivers side, but from what i read they arent plastic, and it is pretty secure.

Yeah Jordan, one is reverse switch and one is the neutral switch. I THINK I have a spare switch somewhere here but I don't know if it will be the same!

But the fact that it would be working SOMETIMES, would that mean that it is loose not broken?
Ill go tighten them both.

Jordan here are some pics of what it looks like inside the box

Switches and plugs, note where the wires join to the switch, this could be your problem. When I was doing these pics, one actually broke there!

So as you see, tightness of the switch into the box won't matter, if it's the switch, it will be the plastic part worn inside the box, the wires connecting to the switch, or the plugs where it joins the loom!

EDIT: unless they are really loose and wound a bit out!

I may have the wrong things then adam?
I tightened both of the plugs in my picture, both were a bit loose, tight now and still not working.
(im uploading a video now)

okay, in the video:

First plugs (dark green(or black) and red(or brown)) go straight from where shown, (i show the cords again) to the plugs that i showed in the first picture.

Should only be 3 electrical things on the box, the 2 on the right will be reverse switch and neutral switch. Ignore the plugs, they could just be different between your audm lib, and the jdm sti box that those switches are from.

Not sure how to test the switches with a multimeter though
