Subaru and Toyota know what you're planning for your new 86 or BRZ: drop the stock wheels in favour of something lighter and bigger, swap the bumpers out for a track-focused option, tear out the insides and get racing.

For Japanese buyers, that mission is now a little easier, with new Purist versions arriving with a lower price - and a lot less kit.

The exterior differences are clear: steel wheels will get the car from your house to the workshop, and in the case of the Toyota 86, there's unpainted bumpers, mirror caps and door handles. Likewise, there are no fog lights and no rear spoiler.

The brakes are all a basic 380mm disc package - still ventilated at the front, but solid at the rear - and the torsen diff has been tossed for a mechanical unit.

Inside, you'll find these items missing: air conditioning (and its compressor), audio system and speakers, the knobs from the hand brake and gear shifter, the stainless-steel door sill plates, door lamps, floor mats, door lamps... and the leather from the steering wheel.

All of this makes the car 40kg lighter, but how much lighter the Purist will be on the hip pocket (or if it will even be an option in Australia) is unclear.

Haha that is awesome. Haven't seen a car sell without hubcaps (other than utilities) in forever. I doubt they'll sell it here though. People like their bells and whistles. I personally would still get the air-con fitted if it was a daily... kills the resale. Unless racecar.

No chance it will make it to aus or if there would even be a market for it. My old JDM FD was a race spec one from the factory with lots of the reductions in luxury for performance.
