Sorry if this is stupid but it seems like you need to think outside the box on this one so ill add a random thought for consideration, Faulty fuel filter/partly blocked fuel line?

Faulty fuel filter/partly blocked fuel line?

Nothing's stupid, considering the engine's been out and in already, I think it's something ancillary and minor too :)

Probably check the whole fuel system, would be good.

You need someone with has a lot of experience with subarus, and someone who isnt going to d**k you around like subaru has. Al, pure and simple mate.

+1. Try replacing (or borrowing someones?) fuel pump and possibly the coil pack if it hasn't been done already. Fuel filter could be a possibility but I would hope that its been changed at least once already in the cars life.

Doesn't really sound like any Subaru-specific issue. Any good mechanic should hopefully be able to sort something like this out.

I would have gone to the kitchen, collected a brown bag, dropped my dacks, pinched off a loaf in said bag, done up dacks, stickytaped bag, placed bag in envelope, and mailed it right to your face for being such a tool.

to be honest guys ive suggested the fuel pump, lines, everything since kinck off, to me it just felt as tho the car has been getting starved. apparently in the fault finding, they have gone right through it all, checked pressures and everthing along those lines. ive had the manifold air sensor replaced, and it didnt do a thing and i am trying to think outside the box. because im becoming more and more prone to thinking that it is something so very simple. still might take it to al, so that way im taking it to one, someone who knows subarus, and two someone that i know is trustworthy... still i will look at fuel pump, and filters again, and look at the coil pack idea.. maybe even some leads or something along those lines... thanks again lads

Might be worthwhile just to get someone external to fix it, seems like you're not getting very far with Subaru anyway :)

If it really only happens under heavy load, I'd put money on a weak spark or as you said, fuel starvation. Problem is both have the same symptoms ;)

I would have gone to the kitchen, collected a brown bag, dropped my dacks, pinched off a loaf in said bag, done up dacks, stickytaped bag, placed bag in envelope, and mailed it right to your face for being such a tool.

Seriously Soop, that from you ?? I would definately be looking electronics, knock sensor or O2 sensors first. Are you getting any ECU codes ? Forget subaru they are not worth the paper their certificates are printed on sometimes. Crazy things can cause stupid problems, a problem with a road speed sensor can throw temp sensor, MAF sensor, knock sensor, and idle control valve codes for example, I know, it cost me $10k to fix that one, just because a $250 speed cut defender was giving a dodgy speed reading back to the ECU. Then again a faulty O2 sensor can throw a multitude of codes and if you are lucky, an O2 code as well, plus cause crazy things to happen like surging, fast idle, hesitation, and the list goes on. Just now I have changed my knock sensor after getting a knock code funnily enough, its the first time I have replaced a sensor and fixed a problem by just changing only the actual part that was showing as being the problem, amazing. These cars are so tied up in electronics that one faulty sensor can send you on a crazy trip down the garden path. I say that your fuel pump is probably fine, and if you have coil packs I doubt it is that because from your basic description it sounds like the car is hesitating and one coil pack broken will cause more of a miss than anything, ask Dylan, my bet would be a sensor that controls ECU functions like timing and fuel like O2, MAF, or Knock. Oh, also I drove my Legacy to Als from Sydney going like a total bag of crap, it made it because it was a suby, your drive to Sydney will be fine, just do it. Regards Paul

Hey Kurt, I have not given any advise thus far, and really I'm little help now, but this I do Have to add... Subi Techs really only look at fault codes. If you have a problem more ellusive than this, you really have to go to great lengths to convince them, and then they get Jim McCabe involved, and if you are really 'lucky' the 'trainers' and propellor heads at head office. You then need to convince them firstly, that you know enough to not cop the 'within specs" "customerservicespeak" to get you to go away... You, just like me have been through all of that... This week I had Zupps tell me the most telling thing yet- ' Take it to your subaru specialist, and get him to indicate where he would look and we might even take a look a the possibility of covering your costs for him to fix it"... wow!!! Regardless, at this point you should be past the gall produced by your inner tight ass, and like me, it is time to give the car to someone that isn't zupps, and see if they can diagnose the problem... Am I reading right that you have had an engine change? what was the impetus behind this? Subaru don't do that without a reason, what did they discover? Was it a short block or were most of the ancillaries and heads etc changed and well. Look at what was changed as being on the short list, the rest as being still sus... I would like to drive your car to really tell you more, but the previous posts regarding starvation or ignition have to be near the money... I just wouldn't mind betting with my experiance that a morning with the car with Michael Collins at Scorpion at Capalaba would get you a long way towards the diagnosis... You know me. PM on any forum and I'm happy to help bro.

good work poop, clearly as usual your input is worth every letter.. on the other hand, thanks lads for the info. ive pondered starting to change bits and pieces in hope that it is just one thing that fixes it over night. but taking it to someone is clearly going to be the answer.. the knock sensor has had work on it, and it was "shimmed" by Jim McCabe himself, wasnt too impressed with that after the description he gave me. it has since been removed. MAF sensor has been done too.. And ric yeah it was a short motor, 40k ago, and its not been the same since then.. and for sure can organise a meet up for you to have a drive.. seems to have puzzled everyone else that has driven it lol... thanks again guys

sounds like one of your cams is out of timming, by 1 tooth at least. who touch it last and what did they do to it before you had this problem? is it lacking power throughout the whole rev range and under all throttle loads?

from speaking to a few different people in the last couple of weeks, it does sound as tho it could be the cam timing.. either way, still going to take it down the goldy next month and throw it on the rollers and get it tuned by someone that knows the front end from the back end. thanks heaps guys for all your help
