hey all
so turns out that my new h6 wasnt as much of a bargin as i thought at first...
basically there is a slight knocking on the passengers side head, firstly after some research apparently the h6 engine has issues with the timing tensioners failing over time so that was my first diagnosis... Took the car to see BenTZ today and he said its too far back in the engine it must be a stuck and or sticking lifter and advised an oil change to a thicker oil (20w50). bought 6litres of oil, drained the oil and topped it up, still head is ticking and then when i bottled the old oil there is less than 5.5Litres that came out...!!! and that was after i changed the oil 4days ago...!!!
so its quite clear that i have an issue if i burn 0.5 of a litre of oil in 4days...
can anyone point me in a direction, i have posted a video on youtube that is linked below of the sound, for refrence the as the revs are increased in the car the noise increases in speed...

help please..!

if its a sticking lifter you dont want thicker oil u want thinner to get into the hole where the lifter is.
you could try some engine flush and a fresh lot of 10/40 ive never herd that sound before??? verry weird
also could be a valve riding?

I had 10w40 in it previously, I have had someone on another forum saying it could be a faulty valve spring...

You can buy a 'lifter freeing' additive for the oil.
I usually dont believe in all that stuff but i have use these before and they seem to work.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

Haha, ;)

No good Scotty, thats sort of what my engine sounded like when i changed an exhaust part over on my car… It was a leaking gasket.

Sounds a bit like a dead lifter.

Try unplugging the injectors one by one (if you can get to the plugs) and see if the noise changes when a cylinder loses it's power stroke.
This will eliminate anything deeper inside the engine, leaving just the valve train.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

Why's a lazy valve going to increase oil consumption to the degree we're seeing here. If the stem seal is OK that is.
To use that much there's got to be bottom end stuff going on IMHO.
As Tony Montana would say:

Then when you get the money, you get the power.
Then when you get the power, then you get the women.

engine is still at SUbaru, engine hasnt been pulle ddown yet but they are thinking it is either a valve retainer is gone or apparently these engine run twin valve springs and the smaller one might be gone

will update when i get a call with a diagnosis

not looking like fun though

alright so i got the engine back and put it back in the car, and runs perfectly, the guy who disassembled it and cleaned it could not find anything wrong with it.

a full VRS (no idea what this stands for) was done on the engine, all valve seals were changed. my only guess adn what Ben (93tzlegacy) have possibly thought it might have been a slight blockage somewhere.

apologies i cant provide any more info

I ran 5w30 in my Outback 01 and still in my 08, thinner & gets around the place better... I had a bit of ticking noise too but I think it was my valve clearances, still ran sweet though.

A VRS kit is a valve re-seal kit.

At least it's all good now! Can't wait to see this car in person.
