Seized Shocks

They quoted a nice $675 to fix it for me.
Lol.
Is there anything I can do here to fix it myself or is a new set of shocks in order?
The gear is out of an 06 WRX STi and have less than 60k kms on them.
The rear creaks a fair bit but I just put that down to the RSB links and mounts. Perhaps it was the shocks all the long?!
I also get a bit of creaking in the fronts too when going over speed humps at low speed. I'm guessing they may need a regrease?
Any help would be appreciated

Take the old yellow shit out, regrease with LMM.
Surely they can't be that badly seized... I mean you didn't notice!

Yeah you’re right, I didn’t notice it myself but this is my first lowered car and I honestly thought that’s just what STi gear felt like!!!

Apparently they no longer go back up by themselves?
Jump up and down on the back of the car.
If you can see the struts compressing (and rebounding) they are not seized. (seized shocks are rare)
Did they explain how they found this fault?
If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

What exactly caused them to seize up, Jase? Old grease? Gunk getting in there? Or simply failed components?

I would think you would notice there is something wrong.
I fail to see how "they no longer go back up by themselves" has anything to do with a seizure. If the were seized, they wouldn't even go down....der.
If they are gas pressureised shocks they would rise after being compressed, std oil shocks will not rise as they are not under pressure.
This would need to be tested with the spring removed or it would just be the spring that pushes it back up.
Ask them for a more technical explanation of exactly what is wrong, why it needs to be fixed and how they intend fixing it.
FYI My favorite shocks are KONI and they are not gas pressurised.

If you push down on your boot and it springs back up again, they're not dead...
MIght have to organise a regreasing day soon though!

Castrol LMM will do the job perfectly.

Next one is Timmys wedding
Damn. Might have to be after that!
+1 for going back for a better explanation. You would know if you had seized shocks!
Castrol LMM will do the job perfectly.
Yeah might give them a call tomorrow...
Can you buy LMM from any auto shop?

A 450g cartridge will do the same job a few times with a bit to spare.

I have a gut feeling that they may be kaput and not rebuildable. I'm sure the cherry red/pink STi struts are regreasable, but the blacks are merely sealed KYBs.
I may be wrong, but for some reason, I'm thinking this.
Check rexnet/RSLC.

my fronts squeak but my rears are quiet, apparently they are known to clunk in the rear, the ones in mine atm have only done about 10k
id be really surprised if they are dead

If I have some time tomorrow, I'll ring the guy and have a chat. Am really interested to know how my $675 would fix it...
Awesome DIY thread too. I'd say that's what I have to do.
Might mount the GoPro under there as well and see if there is infact any movement while driving.
