How does dodgy fuel affect the cars lack of 'cranking' on start up? :)

Actually my old 2.5 motor did it a lot..particularly with shell v-power for some reason?

Only on first cold start, than all day itd start fine....but that first start it acted like it was flooded?

Weird...but true

Never had it on the STi motor though.....because 20psi obviously

Cranking up the boost could solve your problem Adam! Not too sure though as the 20psi fix is a gen3 thing

^^this guy knows his shit ;)^^

Most gen2's can only handle 15psi due to the shear stress on the chassis

My Commodore did it too on 98.
Fuel would flow through the injectors when the engine was off, so fuel pressure needed to build before it would start.
Plugs were a little wet first thing in the morning but the rest of the day it was fine.

From that we can clearly see that a VS Commodore wagon is just like a 20psi GenIII.

Problem is gone!

Adam,
As you ignored my post on how to diagnose a starter issue; I need you to refit the dodgy starter, carry out the tests, post the results on this forum (with pics) then refit the new starter.

kthx

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

Sorry, I was on my phone, too hard to write lengthy responses!

If you have a volt drop from terminal to post of 1.75 volts you need to clean your battery terminals. That is a huge amount. If you have 11 volts on crank, thats actually reasonable.

11 volts was on crank, I cleaned the terminals, no difference!

You had one lead on the pos and the other lead on the neg didn't you??

I would have expected less than 2 volts.

Re-read what I wrote.........

........doofus.

Yep, one on pos and one on neg, maybe I misunderstood what you wrote?

Most gen2's only need 15psi due to the severe superiority to other models

Haha, Jase. I tried your methods of diagnosis, I had no luck getting a voltage on the battery to starter terminal? And as I already bought the starter I figured I'd just chuck that in and see.

Your post wasn't in vain though. I did learn alot from it, Definitely appreciated!

Ran out of time to fit it all back together and test, but will definitely trying the voltage drop tests again for my own interest!

You did.

I figured I'd just chuck that in and see.

My work is to prevent this type of behaviour.

For future reference - there should be 0 volts between positive terminal and starter terminal. The meter will measure voltage difference between the positive/negative leads. so if you have 12V on one lead and 12V on the other lead, it will show 0V. I know lots of the technical people will think this is stupid for mentioning this, but lots of people dont know how a meter works, and can't diagnose a fault because of the lack of understanding.

Good to hear you found the issue anyways. Send it off for repairs so you have a spare, or sell!

MY00 Red RX, a nice daily that was sold off once the B4 became reliable...
MY02 Blue B4, aka 'The Project' - v8 JDM STi engine package and assorted other 'goodies' - Sold, then bought back for parts. Stripped and crushed.
MY03 Blue RX, the newer old daily, pretty well more B4 than RX now... In the process of being converted to the track toy... Watch this space!
MY02 Silver Wagon, H6 conversion, full blue/black leather and almost full black interior to go with it.
MY03 White/Silver H6 Outback, donor car for silver waghoon.
MY97 Silver RX, acquired to become track car, but plans changed. To be stripped and scrapped in time.

I've got a mate who can get me cost price starter and alternator parts so I might just do that!

Also. I definitely don't know how to fully work a multimeter. Will be learning when I have time!
