Hello Community :)

New here, guess this is the right place to post

Now within the last month i bought a 1996 WRX Impreza GC8 with a EJ20G i believe... I'm car illiterate so you're going to have to bare with me :dash2:
The plans for this car is a learn to drive into somewhat of a performance car down the track.. It is also for me to learn about cars, how to DIY, repair blah blah, i love my cars but I'm clueless!

The engine in there now is past its prime and is in need of a rebuild, this is where my other rexy friends have stepped in with their opinions

Not knowing much about this stuff i am stuck...

Do i got ahead annnd
1. Rebuild this engine that at this moment has 240xxxkm thrashed of its guts
2. Chase up another EJ20
OR
3. Do i convert it to a 2.5? Is there a model that would bolt right it? is this a complete waste of time for someone with little knowledge like myself?

I have been quoted 3k starting price for a rebuild with me supplying the parts (god knows what i have to buy or how bad the engine actually is...)

I have 6 months at a minimum to turn it into a daily runabout, there is no rush at all.. :yahoo:

Just some friendly advice would be amazing! A point in the right direction,

Thankyou :)

Hey buddy,

Welcome to Subyclub.

If you could, give us some more details about the car, and more specifically what's broken in the motor?

Cheers,
Shaz

I put up with people from amnesty, red cross and now the cancer council almost daily hounding me!! Throw in the greens, green peace, unhcr, save the forking children and I've well and truly hit my limit for the number of fuckstains wanting me to sign something or give money. Seriously cubts,  :fork: right off.

Im from Darwin in the NT :)

Well in around 7 months i need it as a daily, around 300whp would be nice over time, not right away, just want to keep up with the other import boys at track days :)

Thankyou :)

Well it needs a new head gasket i know that 100%
It blows white smoke out the dipstick and oil, a mechanic said that's either piston rings or PCV valve
There is low compression on two of the cylinders

Thats all i know, I'm still learning all of this stuff, One of my mates friends said he could rebuild it for me, but said there could be so many more problems aswell..

Cheers mate! Rough start to my ownership but not a single regret in buy her :D

It'll be piston ring lands if it's pressurising the crankcase and you have low compression.

If i was you, I would be buying a EJ207 shortblock/gasket kit.

Getting the current heads sent away to a workshop to be crack tested and if ok, Serviced.

Put them two together along with the best supporting gear you can buy.

Convert to COP, VF30 or VF34, STI TMIC, STI 440cc injectors, Walbro 255 fuel pump, 4.44 5spd box and diff, Organic clutch, 4pots off a later model wrx, sti wheels with sticky tyres, coilovers and some swaybars.

I'm planning on using that setup (Only difference is I rebuilt the existing EJ20, I should have went with a EJ207) in my track project.

Should give you plenty of good times. Unless you want to go crazy. The setup above should cost you around 7-10k if you shop around and do the work yourself.

So many options.

Yeah, every person i talk to here locally all give me different options, but i don't know enough to feel confident.. My knowledge is pathetic, which is why i turned to the community! haha

I see there is a brand new sti shortblock EJ207 on ebay with the gasket kit for $3.1k, sound about right on price?

Might even hit up the wreckers..

Thanks for your help man! might just do exactly that, seems like a safe bet

Yep. It's either ebay for 3.1K or Subaru trade price which is 2.9K

So 3.1K for the general public is a awesome price!

If you need any parts for your car. Give these guys a buzz.

Ben & Scott are Subaru nutcases. They will look after you.
