Considering that I work in a motor dealership group, I don't believe it's all that important to have 'peace of mind' services carried out by Subaru.
Most of the time a standard service is simply just a change of oil and filter.
Personally, I have my car serviced at Hyundai. Though, I know them and the guys that work there own Subaru's themselves.
I don't believe there is a problem with an apprentice working on the car, It's not rocket science.

If anyone managed to catch 'The Checkout' on abc the other night. http://www.abc.net.a...isodes/ep01.htm
It discusses about how manufacturers such as Holden, Subaru, Mazda etc. In this example Mazda say "It must be serviced to Mazda specifications and standards every six months" and "Failure to maintain your Mazda in accordance with the requirements may void your New Vehicle Warranty"
When in fact, this is breaching Australian law.
I recommend you watch the video I've linked. (26 mins in)

In summary, Theres no need to have your car serviced at Subaru :)

Doesn't really apply here because our cars are out of warranty, but some mechanics are licenced (for lack of a better word?) so that their work can still be valid under warranty.

Dad used to get the Lexus dealer to service our car until he found out that our local mechanic can do better work for cheaper and the warranty is still valid. Granted we don't get another Lexus to drive around in for the day with door to door service but oil changes went from $800 to $150.

Yeah Morgan :)
Thats the point.

It just adds to the whole mindset that the car needs to be serviced at the dealership, when it doesn't!

I think if I had the money to drop on a brand new car, I might consider dealer servicing for a while. At least until it was run-in anyway. But after that I would do the interval services (on a turbo) and take it to a reliable mechanic that has serviced our other simpler cars for a while, for the log book services. I was pretty happy with the job our mechanic did, he didn't get all the air out during the coolant change, but he fixed it the next day for nothing. Gearbox feels heaps better too after its service. We haven't dealer serviced our cars for years, they rip you off blind.

Thanks for that WALKER, much appreciated. I always thought that 'peace of mind' would mean getting a service done at a dealer that's all.

And that's a huge difference alone Morgs. Such a pain in the arse when you're forking out so much money when somewhere else can give you the same thing at a fraction of the price.

Thanks for the tip Jovi. Penrith might be a bit too far for me, but it'd definitely suit Zig_Zac.

That's what I'd do too tsg. As people have said on here and the other topic I discussed this in, there is definitely no need to pay premium price for servicing if your car's warranty is over. It'd be silly. I didn't know that prices differed so much at all actually. Either way, Ben from ICHIban has gotten back to me so all is well. :)

It's not that hard, really..

It's not hard to do any services, but I have a few things that need a professional to take a look at. If it was just the checking of my oil and stuff then that's easy as. Like the boys have recommended, you can get a workshop manual for your B4. That way you've got proper instructions to follow so as not to go blind as soon as you open your bonnet.

Thanks for the vouch stocky. I have six days off from work (but TAFE tomorrow, which is a holiday) so I will definitely be floating his way before the end of the week. Should be sweet.
