I have had this humming sound from about 3 weeks now that is driving me crazy. Its between 60-80kms and coming from the rear of the car. When crusing i can hear it constantly. If i take my foot off the accelerator it stops straight away but as soon as i touch the accelerator again its back.

Ive checked the wheel bearings for play and theres none. Ive check the diff oil and its fine (although due for replacement).

I think its wheel bearings as the noise started not long after i got rid of the 20's and put stock 17s back on but then again it could be tyres but i think they would be a constant sound not speed dependant.

Any ideas?

That is odd..  I would have jumped on tyres but if it disappears when you let off the Gas.. makes me think its possibly some exhaust issues.

does it do it out of gear.. see if you can replicate it cruising along.. clutch in and slowly lift the revs up to where your cruising RPM is.. about 2500 in 5th?

cars done 90k/kms. i can cruise at 60-80kms put the clutch in and the noise stops. let the clutch out and the noise isnt there but as soon as i touch the gas its back.

tried crusing at 60-80 put the clutch in and rev and it doesnt do it. its either in the driveline or bearings but i dont know how i can determine which

Yea, agree with Alex, sounds like rear diff. They make speed and throttle dependant whines when they are on the way out. Eventually it will get worse to the point it starts clunking and lurching the car. When I pulled the diff from my old skyline I found one of the shafts that the spider gears sit on had sheared and was only being held (although very generally) in place by the other spider gears...

Mine started exactly like that, 70-80 was the start, and the loudest point as it got worse. The speed range it whined at steadily got wider and wider until it started at about 20 km, and started clunking at 100+, at which point I limped it to a mates place and changed the diff.

Took about 6 months to get to the proper f^*&ed point though, so you do have some time to change it out.

going to try a tyre rotation and an oil flush with some Syntrax 75w-90 and see if it makes any difference

That will certainly prolong it, but it wont work magic tricks. Expect to be replacing it at some stage. Start saving!

Edit - I should mention that this isnt an urgent issue that needs to be dealt with tomorrow. It will need to be dealt with soonish, but unless the mechanic opens it up and finds bad crap everywhere, its not going to be an 'insert credit cards (plural) here' moment.

so bumping this up the issue is the 4 bearings in the rear of the gearbox. running on the hoist it could be heard without a stethiscope its 100% the issue. So now while thats getting replaced ill be doing the clutch also as it save on labour costs in the future. Subaru genuine parts is about half the price of subaru here for the clutch parts.
