Hey guys,

Got a leaky seal. How hard is it to change? What's it actually called and anyone know the part number? Is this something repco would carry? I can't find anything on the net!!!

Oil is coming out between the main body of the box and the ribbed ring.

Found out some Info for you

You will need a o-ring and an oil seal

You will need to remove the retainer thingo
''The RHS reduces the crownwheel to pinion backlash but also combined with the LHS both of the caps together preload the diff carrier (side) bearings.

You can do it without any special tools, but mark the cap & case in 3 non-symetric spots.

You MUST count the exact number of turns when unscrewing the cap!

And upon re-installation count the exact turns in then align your three non-symetric marks.

if the lock tab isn't lining up flip it over there's 1/2 a tooth difference between sides.

A lack of preload will have your front diff sounding like mine (Cheers - Sik'em Rex & previous owner)......''

Thanks, Mate! That's what I've just come up with aswell after downloading a more comprehensive manual than my haynes one! I'd say the O-Ring is the one that's leaking (I'm going to change both anyway) Just need to find the right part number now :)  I've found the one for the oil seal. Just not the o-ring!

No worries :)

The steelership should be able to find out, but dunno if a wrx box is the same as the 5 speed found In a gen 2.

I did random checks of a fair few kits and all the part numbers are the same. I'd say they are the same across all 4 bolt boxes.

Sounds like it won't cause a problem then.

Parts will be a few days at the minimum, I ordered the brake shims though the dealership from
Japan land and they took about 2 weeks (got them last Friday)

Adam,

Mark the position of the ring in relation to the trans case and make sure you install it in EXACTLY the same position. (count the turns when removing it)

The is the adjustment for the side bearing pre-load in the front diff.

Good way to get confused.

Mark it in one spot.

I use a sharp pin punch so the marks don't wash off.

I just did both sides of these 2 weeks ago.

As Jase said, one mark only. A scribe or small flat blade screwdriver and score a line on the ring and the case to line it back up with. Thats what I did.

Its your O ring thats worn same as mine. Seal was fine but for only a few $$ replace anyway.

Start spraying them with WD-40/Rost Off/Inox/KY/any sort of anything to make it easier.

I broke a few tabs on the 5MT when I did all the seals on it and absolutely forked (as in buy a new one) the RH side on the 6MT putting the seals in it.
