Hey there

I know a few of you have had their number plates remade in a different colour combo. Did you have to turn in the originals? Is there a way around it so you can keep them?

I have seen Marty's original plates hanging on his garage wall in the M|C|M videos so there must be a way around it...

My MLA ones are split between the holes (lol) and I'm wanting to get them remade in a different colour. Would like to keep the current b&w ones for my man shed one day :)

Any tips?

Cheers

Interesting topic and I've always wondered the same thing as I've got cousins and uncles that have kept plates. I must ask them next time I see them if this topic doesn't get answered to beforehand.

The only remark I can find about my question:

What is a "replace"?
A "replace" is a like-for-like replacement (identical style and content) of your existing plate. Replacement plates can only be ordered if your plates are worn or damaged.

They will usually ask you to bring the old ones in. if you want to keep unregistered plates you’re supposed to take them back into the RTA (or whatever they’re called now) and they will store them for you (for a fee of course). I think it's illegal to have plates in your possession either from an unregistered car (longer than 3 months since rego lapsed) or duplicates (which may affect you) of plates that appear on a registered car.

Hot plates are worth a bit for various reason which is why the RTA/Police need to keep a close handle on them.

That said I have a few sets of deregistered plates that have come off cars that I’ve sent to the wreckers. The RTA used to send out a letter saying that you had to hand the plates back in but I never did and they never followed it up

Couldn't you just get some fake plates made up if you wanted something for the man shed?

I'm a sentimental bloke.

Would be cool to have the original personal plates hanging in the shed.

Morgan you missed this bit:

No, it is an offence to retain number plates for longer than:

  • 14 days after losing your Rights (see the circumstances below), or
  • within the time specified for return when your plates are recalled by the RMS.

But yeah, just keep 'em. Say they were stolen - they send a letter to return them after a while but that letter just goes in the bin.

If you say they are stolen, you will need new plates with different numbers :P

Ahh true Adam, I've always gone in to order different plates.

I actually thought this thread was going to be about making your rego plates. I've always wondered about how some Euro's get away with the vinyl cut lettering on black acrylic plastic that you see sometimes.

There's a whole procedure for stolen plates including reporting them to the police and getting an incident number and stuff. I wouldn't be able to get the same combo if I did that. Cops would pull me over thinking I was the thief!

you need to report them damaged. say there damaged beyond repair due to an accident and its been destroyed. return 1 of the plates and re order in the new style

That's your best option I think Morgs... I didn't think of that one.

I have kept a few sets of plates, the getaway cars had to be dumped though..

Would I need a claim to go with it or police report or something?

well its not "stolen" or "lost" so it cant be used in a fraud so i dont see why it would need to be reported.

I do this.

Or I order a single slim style one online, and just keep the one I took off.

I pretty much have a plate from every car I've owned.
