So I've just completed a 5000k road trip from Melbourne to Brisbane and back car can back with a couple speakers blown and terrible brake shudder from all 4 wheels especially the front left, might have been the great alpine road ;)
So is it better to machine them or replace them
And if replace them how much am I looking at and which rotors should I get ??

getting ready for the flames....

depends on how much you want to spend really..

Daily.. just get new $99 pair of noname rotors from Ebay...

Spirited hills driving.. go DBA or RDA's standard rotors. just a better metal is used in making them about - $200 a pair

Heavy Hills / Twisties / TrackDays ... DBA 4000 / T3 series $350 - $400 a pair

depending on how bad the rotor is.. it may be warped or it might just have have uneven pad build up on it.

machining rotors is usually around the $30 mark for each axle.

but they need to be above minimum thickness.. which i think is 24mm on the Gen3

I'd focus on the fronts to start with. If that doesn't get rid of the shudder, look at the rears.

As Ty said, they need to be a certain thickness to be machinable but for the money, it's best to look at this option first. New pads are a good idea when doing this.

Otherwise, have a look on ebay and see what kind of rotors are available. Spend between $100-150 on a set. Then go to Supercheap and get some new pads :)

This will depend on price.
In a lot of cases, new rotors can be purchased at not much more than machining.

Always fit new pads when machining or replacing.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

I'm in need of new brake discs and am getting them replaced by Ben at ICHIban. He is able to get me RDA discs for quite a good price. I'll be adding my Hawk Performance Ceramics once these go on also.

In the grand scheme of things, you'd be better off getting new discs man. It's only a few dollars more and I've had this same discussion with various members a couple of months back when I initially opened up a splitting image topic. You won't regret it and will get more life outta them.

Depending on the runout, It's always cheaper to machine.

If you wanna do it cheap, Just machine and throw in some new pads (Bendix HD's)

If you want some bang for buck, Throw on some DBA 4000 Series Rotors, Replace the pads with QFM HPX's and flush/bleed the system with some quality brake fluid.

RDA slotted rotors will be more then enough unless your tracking the car.

New unslotted rotors (or machine the ones you have) with new pads and a full flush of the brake fluid will make a world of difference alone.

As for brake fluid, not necessary but preferably get the good stuff.

As for pads, Benidx Heavy duty or Ultimates will be more then enough.

All the advice given so far is spot on but.

I had standard RDA slotted and gave them an absolute flogging with my WRX and they were fine. For the price you can't go wrong.

Yeah that's my point, you would only need to go DBA if you were tracking on a regular basis. RDA's are more then up to the task

The only good thing about slotted is its easy to know when to replace them once the slots have disappeared :sarcastic:

Rotors are a disposable item, I used to run $40 ones on my wrx and toss them after 2 supersprints and they pulled me up just as quick as the $400 ones.
