ej25 rebuild tips?

i work at a subaru specialist but we normaly out sorce rebuild work as we are a small compay. anyway i have an 02 RS impreza that is in desperated need of a big birthday. currently i have a leaking head gasket and possible fingered piston rings. not to mention terrible fuel economey (not to do with driving style thanks).

 

i planed on doing a full rebuld on my girl but the guys at work could not realy offer too much help in terms of pricings for parts and what not. so i was wondering what sort of costs would be envolved in rebulding the engine, also i have done mutiple head gasket jobs at work, so i have no problems pulling the engine and stripping down to the heads. but i have never gone further than that. i need to know how much more work will be required to strip the whole thing, will it be relitvly easy like the heads?

 

any tips will be greatly appreciated, so thanks guys.

Find a crashed 3.0 outback or lib and transplant a H6.

2.5's are asthmatic, fuel guzzling boat-anchors

unless you can get hold of a Quad-Cam EJ25D from a Gen2.

Talk to Cromwood Auto Service, Burwood. They know their subarus so should be able to point you in the right direction.

My 02 RS is good on fuel, and surprised alot of people at track days and general hooning with mates.

Tried reading a Subaru service manual?

Keep the hell away from the DOHC 2.5L NA gen 2 motors. They are renowned for doing head gaskets.

 

But the cheapest way out is a second hand long motor. Otherwise you're up for head studs, gaskets etc. Not worth it unless you really want to do it properly and rebuild what you have.

Service manual will tell you everything you need to know, inc. tolerances etc. Sounds like it wont be too hard for you to get a hold of one. Chat to your parts interpreter to get an idea of the individual parts you need, and you should theoretically be able to get good prices on what you need.

I just went oldschool and used my original head studs when i changes my head gasket. Still going strong a year later. Headgasket itself was like $160-$180 a pair. Id already changed my timing belt etc a few days before.

You can score genuine VRS kits from the states for $300 landed. Comes with every gasket youll need on the engine. Ordered one when my head gasket went in the forester

 cromwood are litraly right around the corner from where i work, im at Pierre Collet Motors.

 iv found the exact same thing with my car, the only thing i dont like is for some unknown reason i have a major fuel surge issue around rh corners when im under half a tank

 they have given me a fair amount of advice, but due to being a small company (3 people including myself) we have to outsourse rebuilds :(

 yeah iv done plenty of H-G jobs, the main reason i dont want to pick up another engine is because i wont know the history of the engine, i dont want to fork out money to get a usedy and then have to rebuild it in a few months because it wasnt in the best condition...

 are these kits any good, i was looking at them but i was a little wary about it because of the price, iv bought plenty of things off ebay but not essentual engine components. what would you rate the VRS kits?

Mine did the same, and got worst. And eventually it would play up driving normally.. Turned out to be a dodgy fuel pump

Yeah mine was all OEM gaskets. All I did was cross check all part numbers (the mains ones I was after mostly) and they all matched. When it arrived had all matching part numbers and all genuine packaging. Was perfect
