Hey guys, I have a 2007 Outback 2.5i with 180,000km on the clock, always serviced by Subaru.
The other day it started losing power under acceleration, and when I stopped to take a look it was making a knocking sound and was misfiring when I turned it over again.
Got it towed to Subaru who called today and told me that there is no compression in the no 4 cylinder, and the cause is likely to be either a broken piston ring, or a valve problem. Apparently they have done compression testing to prove that it's not an injector etc., but I'm still waiting on them to give me the results.

So they have told me I either need the engine stripped down to find the cause, or a short block engine replacement. Given the high km on this engine and the amount of labour required to strip it down to find the problem, I'm leaning towards the replacement engine. Subaru have quoted me $10,300 for a brand new one, and they are looking into second hand availability as well (but I expect their quote for this will also be fairly extortionate).

I know it all sounds a bit vague, but has anyone else had this sort of experience?

I would be very interested to hear everyone's thoughts on a good place to take it in Sydney for a second opinion on the problem, and options for reliable second hand engine replacement.

Thanks!
Pete

Wow, that's unlucky mate. Your best bet would be speaking to the guys over at ICHIban, they are a Subaru specialist and can definitely help with regards to a second-hand engine (or any parts for that matter). I get my car serviced there, have bought parts from them before and many members of the forum can definitely vouch for their work ethic, quality of work, genuine personality and assistance with whatever you need.

I too own a Gen IV Liberty (pretty much the same as an Outback) and have never had any issues like you so I can't really help out with specific diagnostics and what not. I do wish you the best of luck though! $10,300 for a brand new engine is just another example of how much of a rip off stealerships are most times.

Oh, and welcome to SubyClub. ;)

Wanting to buy/looking for: single genuine STi rim, genuine STi front lip, Corazon or Zero/Sports grille and another OEM grille

Can you hook a brother up? Please contact me now. I have cash ready.

Hahahahah $10k for an replacement NA engine.

Definitely look into other options. Ichiban would be the best place to start as Gary said.

Also speak with Kris from Rising Sun Subaru. He sells brand new STI crate motors (short motors) for shade over 2k so can probably get you a new n/a 2.5 for a reasonable price.

Welcome mate.

Yes, as the guys above have said. Definitely worth speaking to a Subaru specialist. It could save you thousands..

I like to think of it as borrowing someone's car and driving it better than them.
