I have no idea what I wanna do tonight. I feel like eating and getting a massage causing me to sleep and only wake up tomorrow.

I done up some lamb grillers :) Yum.

Got asked to stay back this arvo, yeahnah. Going in early tomorrow and leaving early in the arvo. I need to get them to communicate and set priorities they all agree too. ATM I've got 4 people coming to me with their own priorities. Set up a whiteboard so that they can all see what I'm working on and what i've got coming up.

Are these four people your seniors?

Whiteboard system would definitely work. It'll show your colleagues just how much you've got on at any given time.

How's the general work atmosphere there though? Tons better than your previous job right?

1 is the project manager

1 is the owner/boss

1 is the GM/Site supervisor/installer/everything (owners son)

1 is a estimator/planner/sales (owners son)

I would like it if they all went through the Project manager so he can communicate deadlines and help me decide priorities. (obviously the owner/boss could have some input) but I think there is a broken link in communication. So it will be good to try and fix that. Productivity should improve and it will make it easier to get work done.

It doesn't help that I'm slow atm because I'm learning still. It's funny that after 7 years I can still find so much that stumps me!

Atmosphere is great. Everyone is friendly and happy, they all talk to you, say hello and acknowledge you. A few of the blokes from the workshop come in and give me tips and pointers, because they know that if I chafe things it will make their job easier. And if I listen to them, generally they gain respect for you.

Still loving it. Finding it challenging, but rewarding. 9.5hr days feel like 5 min days atm!

That's awesome man. It's really good to hear that you're enjoying the job. It's good when the work you do is challenging yet not impossible, but having decent colleagues makes the biggest difference I reckon. When I first started in Council I was out with the gangs doing concreting, roadworks, etc. The atmosphere was very informal and everyone treated you like 'one of the boys'. Now that I am in the surveying department, I am treated professionally even though I am only just a trainee. The work I do is acknowledged and I'm forever learning new things here and there. They teach me things by the book, and once I perfect it, they teach me the shortcuts and ways around things to get the exact same result.

Such a different bunch of people. A lot of people in the gangs are all about swearing, alcohol, drugs, gambling and going home to random women. Everyone up here are the complete opposite and have a career path; some sort of direction in their lives. I seriously love going to work since moving.

+25.

It was so weird being 100% outdoors doing the physical work as opposed to coming to an office environment where I've got my own desk and have about 25-50% of my time spent out on the field.

Surveying is definitely more mentally draining as opposed to being tough on your body. The tan and having a 'work out' every day was the trade-off in this case, so I've gotta start looking at ways to keep fit. I went to a introductory and beginner's class last night with a mate in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai. I've currently got a gym membership but would really like to get rid of it in favour of one (or both) of those martial arts.

My mate does a similar thing.
He works an extra hr each day so by the time the second Friday rolls around it somehow means he can have it off.
But that's not an RDO...
