Hey guys!

Just got my car back from SubGuru, they dropped a 2nd hand 1995 wrx engine into my 1996 gc8 wrx as i had a blown head gasket and all sorts of cooling problems going on.

---- EDIT ----

Car is running well however they mentioned i should invest in some new coils as mine have a bit of a miss under load, especially noticeable on full boost in 1st and 2nd gear.

Its like; 'Car starts pulling on boost, car near's full boost (around 7psi) 'stutter' boost drops out 'stutter' boost drops out, full boost again  :P

I have only noticed it when launching hard from a standstill.

If i'm cruising along in 3rd and 4th and keep accelerating car hits and holds boost fine.

Is it just my coilpacks?

I've had a CEL saying i need a new o2 sensor, would that cause this at all?

What kind of coil packs would i even need for my car? How much do they cost?

Sorry for the rambling post and newb questions, i really know very little about Subarus atm.. On the plus side i just installed my boost gauge :)

Thanks guys!

does this run the factory coil on plug? its pretty common for the older coil on plug set ups to fail, suitable replacements are the bosch hec716 coil packs, or Version7 STI coil on plug modded to suit.

I think it may just have one coil on top of the motor?

Sorry Scuba-Roo, not 100% sure of what you mean? Like, is the igniter on my coil pack, or separate to the coil packs? I'm not sure tbh :/ how can i check this?

I'll post up a couple of pics of my engine bay if that helps at all. Sorry for the lack of info guys, i really am a newb when it comes to these engines!

Ok. So i edited OP.

It seems to be cutting out on full boost not mid way through boost like i originally posted..

Pulled hard off the lights today, starts reaching full boost at 7psi and sort of cuts out. Boost comes back in and then cuts out etc. Same deal in 2nd gear.. It's fine until it hits full boost then its starts getting all beef jerky.

The guys at Subguru mentioned something about the coil packs, saying its not delivering enough spark or something like that?

FYI full boost is not 7psi, that is wastegate pressure. your turbo wastegate lines may not be hooked up correctly if you are only hitting 7psi.

As stated above. I think on the 96, you should be seeing about 11-12psi?

I like to think of it as borrowing someone's car and driving it better than them.

That's my boost gauge setup. I'm pretty sure that's all correct?

I've read about people in similar situations only getting around 6psi or so from boost, due to not having a 'restrictor pill' in place near wastegate, or something like that?

Any info would be tops, thanks guys!

The boost gauge should be connected after the throttle body on the intake plenum. I can see a bov in your picture. Cheap bovs are known to leak boost and a good one will also leak if the spring tension is not set up correctly. As it is difficult to check whether you have it tight enough at idle (even if you rev your car you won't get appropriate boost as it needs to be under load). Tighten it down and go for a drive, when you release your foot, and the bov doesn't vent and instead you get a flutter, you know you have it too tight, from there loosen it in increments and go for a drive until you are getting a good whoosh of air when you clutch or lift your foot. Hope that helps Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk
