I decided to play plastidip today.

Oh - and does anyone know what sort of paint Subaru uses under the bonnet?

I was playing around with solvents today (turps, meths etc) to get off that black caked under-bonnet residue, and the meths took the paint off back to undercoat  :o

Doesn't worry me too much, as its a white bonnet that still needs a decent respray.. but WTF?!

running shweet, thanks kong.

The new rear sway has made a world of difference to the handling... I've been doing some sly drifts.

Feels like a rally machine - the soft outback suspension has her sniffing high under acceleration.

Kong - your recent pics of Brendan's B4 put me over the edge thinking about this - I just had to do it.

Grandpa spec for now.

I have a matt-black painted switch plate (like the one in the pic) - but am waiting to get hold of a second set of gear-surround and console plastics I can paint.  I might need to importmonster a set of black marbled ones instead.

Sam's GTB/RSK seats went in this morning.

Diagnosed the dead electric rail last night in the driver's seat.. there's a single motor driving a worm gear directly on one rail, and via a flexible drive shaft, another worm gear on the other side. The flexi-side worm gear was stripped.

Did a bit of googling last night and couldn't find any references to any spares for electric seats, so figured my chances of finding new spares (not 'almost about to die the same death' used parts) was pretty slim. I'm not so keen on power seats anyway - they tend to break.

No worries, 'I'll just pop the seat onto my manual rails' he said.

It turned out not to be so simple, but not impossible, either. The power seat is different from the rails through to the steel seat tub. The tub differs in the cloth-clip rails underneath to clear the power gubbins versus the manual.. so the power tub won't fit on the manual rails and mechanism. I had to remove the cover and foam from the power seat and put onto the manual tub. The tub shape is fortunately the same.

Similar problems with the backrest mechanism - the power seat mech just unbolts, while the manual one is riveted, or circlipped on. I couldn't see the obvious way it would come apart. So I had to partially remove the backrest cover to be able to get to the two bolts on the driver's side pivot mechanism and then bolt that onto the manual one. Good thing I did, also found a busted bolster spring attachment point (cable tie fix FTW).

They're much more enveloping, and look the sex. Don't obviously mismatch the rear standard cloth seats, either.

Before and After...

Wow, a lot of work but the end result is heaps better.
These are the most comfortable Suby seats I've tried.

That looks really good mate,

I did the same conversion on my seat, the manual type weights a shit load less.

Great seats indeed.

It was a pleasure to get out of the '08 TbSTi and into my Gen3. Better seats and for me, a better driving position.

Looks better ;)

I may be biased there haha.

Yeah the electrics weigh heaps!

I like to think of it as borrowing someone's car and driving it better than them.

How is the height? I find the stock seats sit a little too high for my liking.
