Hi,

Not specific to TT but....

What is this thing called?

What is it's purpose?

Should it flow freely?

Do I really need it?

A vac line filter? To stop shit from getting to the DPS?

That's what I'm thinking.

yup - vac line filter to stop shit getting into the DPS.

I use the following categorization method for shit I find attached to vac lines:

  • Hard lump in the vac line = pill
  • can blow one way but not the other = check valve
  • can blow both ways, tastes more 'orrible than the previous items, slightly restrictive = filter

I figure anything that blows out of the manifold on its way to a sensor or valve needs a filter, otherwise it'll gum it up.

I'm sure the DPS would be fine without out filters, for some period of time. Somewhere between 1 day and 10 years.

OK...

I removed the "THING" and blew threw it.  Sometimes it would be & easy sometimes it would feel hard to blow, randomly.

So I just did a little test. I connected the secondary line to my DPS without the "thing" and went for a drive. Now I have virtually no VOD.

Guess what ever the "thing" is, it forked and restricting flow to the DPS causing the whole system to be out of whack.

Yup.  Sounds about right to me.

They are a pretty sensitive bit of kit from what I've read, the DPS. Designed for gas not liquid, so probably not the best idea to pump UEC or contact cleaner directly into it.

I would think being virtually VOD-less would be amazing, but I guess there is always the question as to why you are VOD-less

My boost gauge has one of these too. It's just a line filter...

if these things get wet, they'd probably block up (capillary pressure).

interesting findings on the VOD.. I'm going to check my filters out (read: try removing them for a quick squirt) now.

I have previously played with different ECV adjustments and got it to the best all round setting I could.  I'm not saying that simply removing these will get rid of VOD.

Maybe, just get the DPS reading more efficiently thus making the ECU activate the ECV & IACV a little more in range.......  whether that be sooner/later.

It has made a decent improvement though.  I guess 285k of build up wasn't helping.

Now I just need to :fork: off my worn out VF32 to get back to 20 psi.  God I miss that thrust. (Go on Gaz, I know you want to comment on that last statement lol)

It is a line filter and yes you need it.

Especially on a older engine. The older engine will breath harder, Oil will find it's way into things, It's job is to protect the solenoid post filter from icky carbon/oil that will make solenoids stick.

no - I'm not saying I expect miraculous things.. I just want to make sure all the bits I have are working to their original spec as a starting point. Get everything to stock working properly, hook up a boost gauge, then I have a baseline.

I did inspect/clean these filters during my swap (bit of carb cleaner + a blow-through - may have rooted them doing that), but I'm going to check them again now, and if they're restrictive, replace.

I have a couple of these which'll do the job for now..

That's the way!  ;)

It's a fine balancing act with these bastards.

Seeing how much gunk blew out of my solenoids when I cleaned them a while back, I'm inclined to believe they are needed. Especially for a sensitive pressure sensor.

I'm going to try to track down some new one's.

Once I get some I'll cut the old ones open to see what's going on inside. I already know they are rooted but I just want to see anyway, for my own curiosity.

I found the canned air dusters to be great for cleaning filters especially the ones on the solenoids in the black box. The compressed air condenses and the water cleans the filter then evaporates very quickly.

JoshKong if you get the part number for these filters, post it up cos i'll pick some up as well.

One of those small fuel filters for a mower engine might substitute?
