hey guys

so iv just got home from a night of putting the gen 3 through its paces out at the river, and i blew my rear shocks somehow : /

so i was thinking, whats a good suspension setup for off road? like rally tracks with crazy potholes?

are coil overs any good? or are they just for slamming/track use? bilsteins from a b4? would that be suitable?

looking forward to reading your input.

other then the shocks the car performed great out at the river through all the tracks and even managed to get itself out of a bogged situation rather easy on its current tires which are by no means off roady at all lol

ill get some photo's off her all muddy

cheers guys

luke

Just standard shocks are best.

Coilovers would be death with no suspension travel
And Billy's probs have shorter travel than standards and pretty harsh

King lift springs, Strut spacers, New standard shocks, Remove rear swaybar/links and throw on some decent AT tyres that are slightly taller.

You may need a camber bushes for the rear as once you lift it, It will give you positive camber.

tonight got me really keen to make it proper rally spec.

think i might sell them rims and get some 15's with some A/T tires, and do what CAM has suggested.

i mean i want to be able to do this sort of stuff, but still have a car that isnt a night mare on the road.

so im kinda looking for a sweet spot in the middle of the 2 haha

Adam - yeh, that's what I reckon.

Put the outback bits on it.  OEM lift.

I'd watch the potholes with those tyres and rims you have on, too. Looking for a bent rim with that.

I love the dual nature of my OB. Don't know if the OB shocks are any better, but I have run mine through some pretty shitty roads with a load in and they still seem fine.  Body and suspension is clocking near 250k now.

Not 100's of k's of corrugations or anything.

Still handles ok with a decent set of road tyres on it.

If you want real suspension that also seems to handle on the road, this might give you some pointers :)

im guessing kyb shocks with raised king springs would be a good combo them?

was thinking some 15inch bbs rims with some A/T tires might go alright now

and yea, there was more then one occasion were i thought i might have cracked or bent a rim, dont think we did tho

there is a shitload more to good suspension setups than just height and travel/softness

Dampner and rebound are much much more important.. height is only to lower the center of gravity.. the cheap mans way to increase stability..
and in daily cars, thats all you really need.

to get anything near what the rally cars use you would be spending 3-4 times the price of your car on just the struts.oh and rebuilding them every 10,000kms lol

Back on topic though..

Standard struts not lifted and sitting on 15's would be my choice..
more sidewall gives a softer ride firstly and nice new stock struts would bring you back to a stable ride.

Lifting is only really necessary if you are doing offroading and having clearance issues on things like rocks, deep ruts etc, but as soon as you lift the car, your going to start loosing normal tarmac predictability and stability.
More body roll, etc.

I think it depends how often you want to go offroad and what you may encounter. If its minimal, then 15's and some all season tyres are your best bet....

See my post..

Mate i used to have a ball with my car out on some logging tracks.. got some video's floating around somewhere but i used to just run 16's and standard billy's and that was firm but good.
Stock struts would give a slight softer feel.

Most of the Gen2 / gen3's kicking around now would have shagged struts. nice new replacements would make a killer difference!

Perhaps just go with new shocks and some more heavy duty wheels.
Be unique by having the only outback sedan :P?

does anyone have experience with ultima ?

http://www.ebay.com....899d0523&_uhb=1

according to the king springs catalogue they only do raised springs for 3rd gen outbacks/liberty wagons :/

if i go with new factory shocks im looking at 175 each for the rear, still getting price for the fronts

are factory shocks better then these after market brands like sachs, KYB, or ultima etc?

Quick google for Ultima says that they are a cheaper alternative for people on a budget / they are a mixed bag.

Factory seems the way to go?

do bilsteins of a B4 lower the car at all? or does it all come down to springs? i want a firmer ride when im off road as weird as that sounds, i just prefer it i guess.
