I'm currently looking at possibly buying some coilovers for my 1990 liberty gx. I can't find any solid information about the compatibility of coilovers in the rear of the fwd gx. I've read on a few forums that they might not fit into the rears. Does anyone have any history on this or know if they would fit?

As far as I know you won't have a problem fitting awd ones, if you're not finding much searching for your Liberty look for GC8 suspension.

There's something different in the rear suspension with the fwd.

It can be made to work if I recall.
