HAI ok, so... after taking aboard all the pros and cons of doing it, i'm going to heat wrap my extractors to try to reduce under bonnet temps and possibly loose a few hidden killerwasps... i've got 30m of the stuff as well as a whole bunch of steel cable ties... now i'm after suggestions on how to actually fit the stuff... i mean, obviously you just wrap it around the pipes, DUH... but i've heard mention of soaking it in water first, and spraying it with exhaust paint after, and wearing gloves cos it's made of fibreglass and stuff like that... anyone have any pointers before i jump right in and do it this weekend?? anyone want to give me a hand??

I hear it's best to fit it using your teeth...

I would have gone to the kitchen, collected a brown bag, dropped my dacks, pinched off a loaf in said bag, done up dacks, stickytaped bag, placed bag in envelope, and mailed it right to your face for being such a tool.

I've wrapped my dumps, didn't bother with gloves. No, I cannot help. Just make sure its really tight the whole way down, if you see it loosen off you'll have to unwrap it back to that point and just start again from there. Its time consuming if your doing it by yourself, so if you have an extra pair of hands its always very helpful.

Ugh i could ramble on for forking days about this stuff.

Tristans manifolds are 6" off the ground and Mild steel. Can no one else see the issues surrounding wrapping them in an absorbant material that retains heat as its main goal in life?

mate ask your mechanic if it's a good idea to put that stuff on mild steel extractors cause i've seen some nasty things happen to mild steel from heat wrapping .

Tristan will find out soon enough. Ive also been told mild steel is a no no to wrap. I didnt think there were much gains to be had from wrapping NA headers?

Pitting from heat. Rust from trapped dirt and water. Been there done that, got the post card. I told him this about a month ago... There is gains if your racing. The heat wont build up under the bonnet, which means the engine runs better for longer. 140kw street car, it makes no difference. On a 140kw H6 with the manifolds hanging under the car it makes even less difference to performance.

No, they would/do. Particularly being on the coast. The salt in the atmosphere will get trapped in the wrap. Pefect reciepy for munted steel.

that i don't have a spare $700 to replace the extractors if it does actually f**k them up
