Like most people im all for finding my own parts as mechanics generally charge more for their time and effort

Im in the market for a new clutch for my 2.0L 1999 TT B4. A bit of looking around i came across a few on Ebay from US and Japan and they seem cheaper than the same brand here in AU

http://www.ebay.com....=item257f13f281

This one here works out to be around $250AU shipped (this auction came up with a part number i entered from another auction that was for a BE and he wanted $450)

http://www.ebay.com....=item257f13f281

This one here is probably looking the most likely one i would purchase

http://www.ebay.com....=item256552a35f

Very cheap one. Same as stock???

http://www.trademe.c...n-786910152.htm

Then theirs the HD clutch

http://www.trademe.c...n-787310712.htm

So obviously im after cheap BUT i dont want one that will be less quality than OEM

Some links to point me in the right direction would be great =)

As my car is in NZ trademe is best for me but i live here in Australia so i can still buy from Ebay and take parts home

Those are just clutch plates...

You should do the whole kit.

Check the part numbers... http://www.exedy.com.au/clutch-finder

(ps: What's a '99 AUDM B4 ? )

Aw i didnt even bother to read if it was the full kit or not =)

Aw my car is in NZ. Pre face lift model. Subaru Legacy B4 RSK

Ive seen some of those plates and kits. They are complete rubbish and useable.

The clutch plates have excessive movement on the input shafts for instance. You can wobble them about 5-10mm on the splines.

Buy a Exedy one and forget the rest.

Cheers SubyDr. Exedy it definitely is =)

I think ill be going for this option

Whats the difference between a HD clutch to a non HD clutch? Theirs only about a $100 difference in price between the 2

Put a standard clutch back in it if you like your gearbox the way it is now. Standard 5spd boxes don't like the HD clutches. Was recommended this by a local firm to me, and most of my research pointed the same direction.
Jim Berry is good stuff, but you said you were chasing cheap.

MY00 Red RX, a nice daily that was sold off once the B4 became reliable...
MY02 Blue B4, aka 'The Project' - v8 JDM STi engine package and assorted other 'goodies' - Sold, then bought back for parts. Stripped and crushed.
MY03 Blue RX, the newer old daily, pretty well more B4 than RX now... In the process of being converted to the track toy... Watch this space!
MY02 Silver Wagon, H6 conversion, full blue/black leather and almost full black interior to go with it.
MY03 White/Silver H6 Outback, donor car for silver waghoon.
MY97 Silver RX, acquired to become track car, but plans changed. To be stripped and scrapped in time.

Get the flywheel machined too or you will regret it & also void the warranty.
S H U D D D D D D E R!

I used the Exedy. It's a bitch in traffic but a way cheaper option than a Subaru unit.

Yep, certainly wasn't saying go genuine, but don't go heavy duty. Unless you like replacing components in gearboxes or have a six speed, don't go HD. Just go standard. I'm pretty sure the replacement in mine is an exedy unit to, but standard clamp pressure.

The shudder you guys speak of often isnt clutch kit related.

Yep. Could be the rear main seal leaking oil.

I like to think of it as borrowing someone's car and driving it better than them.

Yes, it is basically driver based, but with standard clamp loading you can do the wrong thing and get away without breaking something, most of the time. Sure, you'll slip the bejesus out of the clutch, but you usually won't get banging and crunching sounds.
Much easier and cheaper to replace a clutch than it is a gearbox.

Thank you very much everyone for your feedback. As most of you said dont go with the HD kit so i will go with this one

http://cgi.ebay.com....E:X:RTQ:AU:1123

Very good price imo

As for the flywheel that is also a must along with the rear main seal.

My total quote inc flywheel machine and rear main seal supplied was about $650 BYO Clutch kit

It would be rare to put a rear main in a Subaru. If you do make sure you buy a gen one as the ones you buy from -Bursons-Repco-Any aftermarket shop are complete rubbish.

Said suppliers buy them for around $6 and sell them for $3X to you.

I agree, use genuine wherever possible. I just did a seal in my rocky, I was unable to get a genuine one so I managed to get one from Repco, retailed at $60 odd. I paid $13. And it wasn't a great fit.

Hey mate im originally from NZ to (live in aus but cars in NZ as a run about) I got mine off trademe. Was about $550 from memory and $1000 total including fly machined and rear main seal done (genuine part)

You want this kit here http://www.trademe.c...-1010991247.htm

Your better off going brand new as its not the cheapest thing to change in labor unless your going to do it yourself
