2007 Outback - Engine replacement?

28 February 2014 - 06:35 PM

Hey guys, I have a 2007 Outback 2.5i with 180,000km on the clock, always serviced by Subaru.
The other day it started losing power under acceleration, and when I stopped to take a look it was making a knocking sound and was misfiring when I turned it over again.
Got it towed to Subaru who called today and told me that there is no compression in the no 4 cylinder, and the cause is likely to be either a broken piston ring, or a valve problem. Apparently they have done compression testing to prove that it's not an injector etc., but I'm still waiting on them to give me the results.

So they have told me I either need the engine stripped down to find the cause, or a short block engine replacement. Given the high km on this engine and the amount of labour required to strip it down to find the problem, I'm leaning towards the replacement engine. Subaru have quoted me $10,300 for a brand new one, and they are looking into second hand availability as well (but I expect their quote for this will also be fairly extortionate).

I know it all sounds a bit vague, but has anyone else had this sort of experience?

I would be very interested to hear everyone's thoughts on a good place to take it in Sydney for a second opinion on the problem, and options for reliable second hand engine replacement.

Thanks!
Pete
