Thanks guys,
Yeah for some reason Adam it just grew to be part of me. It's the daily, the fishing wagon, the pack mule etc. but it just feels right. Like when the family dog breaks a leg, it's not just a dog.lol

Well she's back in the land of the living.
all pulleys, guides n associated bearings etc replaced. Tensioner and cover replaced (definitely issues with the bolts per bobbyjimmy's comment - thread looked as though a dentist had been trying to get the bolt out with pliers), 8 valves, heads reco'd. 1 spline missing from pulley (cant remember which one) - could have been a factor in the cause or maybe just collateral damage.
At the same time, clutch thrower bearing, heater hose, couple of other odds n sods.
$3k thanks for coming!
He did say this time it would be good for 100 thou (in front of witnesses) so I guess I'll just chalk this one up to experience, and at least now I know what to look for.....and best of all, the beast is haunting the central coast again!
Really appreciate the thoughts and advice folks!
Greg

OK
belt is basically shredded wheat. All bearings & pulleys are ok. Guides ditto. No obvious marks on anything. Mech's theory is the tensioner - says he's not absolutely certain but process of elimination leads him to that. Says he has seen about 8 similar cases in the past year which he says is why he will only install a kit and not individual components or belts. Fair call.
When I put belt failure to him, he agreed it was entirely possible but we come back to Alex's scenario. Warranty is 12mths/50k.
So it would appear I'm pushing the proverbial turd up a hill.
Of course I'm going to repair it -too good a car to tow away, and at least if min'e rebuilt/repaired I'll know where its been.
The things you do.....
May have to sell the bike to fund this venture.....hmmmmm....unlike....

thanks guys
quivering in anticipation of the mech getting back to me. beast is in his yard atm. The better half says she remembers him saying that he wanted to replace the OEM belts early (194000km) just in case, but he reckoned they were good to 200.
Big drop from 200 to 60?!?!?!?!?!
Didnt get a chance to get a look under its skirt before I dropped it off so I cant answer your questions about bits.
will keep you informed!
