Ahoy hoy lads

Anyone have a ipod charger in their cars, and keen on making it work with their iphones?

I'm working on a hardware hack atm.

Serious?

I have a iPhone/iPod charger in my car and it works faultlessly.

Also my head unit has USB input and it charges/plays/controls my iPhone 3GS easy.

Why do you need a hardware hack??

Because.

My headunit (AVH-P6850DVD), coupled with the optional ipod controller unit supports only ipod charging (firewire 12v) and not iphone/new gen ipod (usb 5v).

It sucks balls. But this is how the clever people at apple make you buy the proprietary equipment to continue to make your HU work.

Not going to upgrade HU at this stage, as I'm liking the 6 indash DVD stacker.

I too have a USB charger A nifty one but I like to be nifty-er.

I know what you mean Alex, my iPod/iPhone cable for my headunit was sixty something dollars. Works fine with the 3G iPhone and iPod.

One crude option is that you get a convertor which allows you to plug in your regular power cords into 12V convertor so you can utilse the 12V cig lighters you would have in your wagon. I have one and on occation its allowed me to charge my phone up before going out at night. But ideally Pioneer will upgrade the firmware to be compatible with the newer models. Don't hold your breath for it though.

Shiv.

Its not a firmware (software) upgrade. Its purely hardware according to my research.

ebay sell these units but i'd rather DIY for a neater install.

Purely hardware is it? Ah ok, well then yeah that unit you posted might be the way to go. But yeah DIY for sure. That unit looks very ugly.
