You're not wrong about the poo discussion.

Morning Alex,

I just got back from Bob Jane for a wheel alignment.

I spoke to Bob regarding the discussion we had the other night about how my new 17" tyre does not fit in the Outback's wheel-well. He said it would be OK to run and use the old 16" full-size spare as there is little difference in the dimensions.

I still feel iffy about that though. I know the difference the new tyres made in my speedo reading (about 3%) and not entirely confident about how much a tyre-fitter knows about diffs and such...

Maybe run with your original suggestion of deflating a 17" spare and having an air-compressor in the boot. Might not be the most practical but may end up saving me thousands $$$

Morning Shiv

try this tyre calculator

punch in the values of your spare and your wheel + tyre, and your current wheel + tyre and see what difference there is.

On my space saver (02 STi, specific to Brembo brakes) there is a slight decrease in size. Like we discussed the other night, if something were to go wrong, I'd chuck it on the front, as that's where I have an open diff (for now....)

Neat little calculator that!

Less than 1.5% difference it seems :)

I'll make note to put it on the front. Thanks for the advise.

I wouldn't stress about 1.5%. If the diff can't compensate for that for a short while I would be very worried.
Also, Isn't the rear diff in the Outback also open?

I'm not sure but I think mines got the "Active" diff. I thought all Gen2/3 autos had the basic "4EAT" system (90-10 split) but I read on NASIOC that the six-cylinder models have a different system altogether, and not sure if that applies to mine.

Really easy to check. Jack the wheels up off the ground. Grab one and spin it. If the other spins in the same direction you've got an LSD.

That is a very interesting concept Nik - I don't hate it, it is just odd.

I am thinking of putting another brew down today. I really want to start fucking around using some proper ingredients but I am just not sure I have the experience yet to do it right.
